Well, some species of snake still have vestigial legs for use during mating.

But the thing about it being a snake comes only from it's name (Tsujata means "Grass Snake"). And we can't expect a Pokemon to be ACCURATELY named (They call Pikachu a mouse, but it's clearly a lagomorph like the real-world Pika). xD

Mijumaru (The otter) evolves into a bigger otter, which then evolves into some Horse-Otter combination or something.

Because Fire/Water/Grass is the most easily understood rock-paper-scissors combination they have, and anyway breaking tradition would send all the Poke-spergers into a ragefit. :V

True, but the starter Pokemon are pretty much the tutorial for the basic concept of the game and it's easy to get a new player to understand "Water puts out fire, grass absorbs water, fire burns grass". There's really no other combination that is as simple to explain, and it's more or less the most balanced out of the 17 types present. Not to mention you can pretty much destroy everything in the game with one of those three with only a few exceptions that pop up very infrequently.

Although the idea of an Ice/Bug/Steel starter trio in a region full of fire types is a wonderfully mean idea. You thought all those exploding Gravellers in Sinnoh were bad, try this on for size >:V

So far my favorite is the grass-type, but I always decide which I use on the final form. Man, I would love if Nintendo makes the final form for the water-type utterly epic. Just shove all the hate people have been throwing toward it down their throats.

the final form is how i always decide, and so I pick grass, Tsutarja. I mean when I play I'll enjoy it because the whole time I'll be imagining what it's thinking, and because of it's expression it'll either be a pothead making fun of who their fighting or it'll be an albert wesker or hannibal lecter monologue. Either way i'll be fighting the urge to laugh while giving the gym leaders and rival the pimp hand.
