Today was to be Mercer's day off. No work, no vigilantism, no fuckbuddies, just him having some much-needed me time after a week of all of the above with little rest. It was a busy life he was living, but no matter how much it drained him sometimes, he would never trade it for anything else.
He was kicking back on his bed with his eyes glued to his phone when the screen changed to display an incoming call. Leo. A little odd, since he would usually text him. Sitting up, the tiger tapped receive and held the phone to his ear.
"Hey there kitten, how's it hangin'?"
The response he got couldn't have been any further detached from the playfully belligerent tone the lion usually addressed him with.
"...please pick me up." Leo's voice was shaky, his breathing labored. Mercer could swear he was trying very hard to hold back sobs, too. Immediately his back straightened.
"Where are you right now? What happened?"
"Back alley... behind the gym... some big guys... ganged up on-" There was a sniffle, followed by an unsteady-sounding exhale. The tiger was already off the bed, storming through his apartment to put on the bare minimum of clothing he'd need to go outside. The gym in question wasn't too far from where he lived, fortunately. With his motorcycle, it would only be taking him a few minutes at most.
"I'll be right there, don't worry. Stay with me. Can you do that?"
Leo made a wordless noise that sounded vaguely affirmative. That was all Mercer needed. He didn't hear much from the other end during the short ride, but he knew keeping the lion engaged in conversation (however one-sided) was better than hanging up. He'd never heard him this broken before...
...And when he arrived at the back alley and saw him slumped next to an overfilled dumpster, he mentally added that he'd never seen him this broken before, either. The poor kitten was covered in cuts and bruises, and he had barely enough strength to even hold his own phone to his ear, much less move at all. There were spatters of blood all over the walls and ground; further testament to the carnage that had to have happened.
Ending the call and pocketing his phone, Mercer immediately sprinted to Leo's side, squatting down to be as close to eye level as he could manage. The lion's face didn't look much better, either. Blood was running down his face from a wound hidden somewhere in his mane, and tears were welling up in his eyes. He looked up to meet the tiger's gaze, and began silently bawling his eyes out, knowing he was safe.
"Hey now, it's okay. I'm here..." Mercer gently embraced him, careful not to cause him any further physical discomfort. He was cold to the touch. "C'mon cub, let's get you patched up." Putting one arm under Leo's knees and the other behind his back, he lifted him up into a bridal carry. That was when he noticed the lion's left arm hanging a lot lower than it should, and he cursed under his breath when he realized he had a dislocated shoulder on top of everything else.
Leo was a tough one, especially for his small and unassuming stature, but Mercer knew this was entirely more than the lion could handle, and that was just counting the physical abuse. He couldn't begin to imagine how severe the emotional abuse must have been, but he was already planning on spending the rest of the day pampering him.
