The End of Otto: Disowning the Cartoon Community
Well... Guess this day has finally come at last, God has it been so long. How long have I been dealing with this guy? About like four or even five years now? Every time I try improving my stuff, or even plan things out or try completing anything. That voice keeps creeping in. Ruining plans and ideas and leaving me on top of the junk pile. Wondering where have I failed all the time...
Now, where do I start? Let me just say, that despite everything I'm going to say in terms of describing this character. (And of course all the times I vented towards the community...) I will at least let those who have opinions I don't really agree with. That doesn't mean I won't stay quiet about it and express my own opinions. Because, spoiler alert, I won't. But again, I'll let those people have these opinions. I'm not gonna be like a certain person and attack critics constantly.
Where do I start? Otto was... let's just say, a pain in my arse, if I'm going to be blunt. Every time I try making something, whether it be merging 2D and 3D animation, or try finalizing Damien's model sheet or anything else I could think of. He always creeps up behind me. Always demanding this sort of unobtainable perfection. And pushing this notion that everything I do will NEVER be as good as anyone else's works. No, Otto isn't this voice in my head, even though he might be considering he IS the inner critic.
No, Otto wasn't so much a voice in my head, but rather the manifestation of the Cartoon Community in general. (Or at least the negative aspect of it.) A big, loud, melodramatic and delusional side of the community. Constantly whines and complains about how cartoons don't meet his unrealistic expectation. All while saying that the animation industry is reaching Death's Door all the time.
And that's not counting how they whine about reboots like Teen Titans Go, the 2016 Powerpuff Girls reboot and even Thundercats Roar. That, and saying that the CalArts institute is to blame with the *Ahem* "CalArts Art Style". And that the only way to make animation is simply through Hand Drawn animation. Ugh, and that problem. Nothing got under my skin the most was that they whined about how CGI is in inherently terrible and lazy. And how anyone who uses it is just cheap, lazy and unoriginal. Implying that people who've busted their arse trying to create their animated shorts, cartoons and maybe even movies are lazy and unoriginal
Yeah, fuck these "Animators" who've gone through hell and back trying to perfect their animation! Who care's about these people when the world can have more animation critics?
Snark aside, I really don't care what animation you make, Whether it be 2D, 3D, Stop Motion or even Puppetry. As long as you yourself are happy with what you make, then that's right as rain. Nut getting back to the topic at hand, I've outgrown all this negativity bull. I'm sorry to say this, but it's true, I no longer find much enjoyment with it anymore.
And while Otto is finally out of the picture, I did have some ideas for this character. For example, he would have different abilities and forms. Such as taking the form of any character of his choice, albeit different colored and warped. Hell, he was even going to have alternate forms. Such as the " Lord of Cartoons" form and even some kind of "Guardian Devil" form when he's enraged. Sadly that may not actually happen, but that doesn't mean I won't try.
But for now, I finally put this demon to rest, (In a hell of his own making) and finally get over a differing opinion that has plagued me for so long. And can finally work on my animations in peace.
Adios, Otto. Please, just never come back, you're not welcomed here anymore!
