Great work! How do you get information that inspires the facial expressions and poses of these sketch collections?

I ask a lot of questions prior to starting these. I try to find out as much as I can about who the characters are, their personality quirks, and the reasons behind certain behavior. The aim is to provide a bit of nuance to the expressions and body language that I'm drawing. I don't want to just draw the character looking happy (for example), I want them to look *satisfied* happy, or *dubiously* happy. If they're dancing, I want to know how they're feeling when they dance so that I can draw them being hesitatingly dancing out of embarrassment, or perhaps awkwardly dancing because they're clumsy.

At some point I plan to write up an essay about the questions I want people to be thinking about when they ask me to draw their character so that they can clearly articulate the visual ways their character would embody their unique personality.

You could also say that my interest in doing this is to prevent me from having to draw the same generic expression over and over and over again...
