“Garfrelenvī, aanō choyat.”
High Admiral t’Klar acknowledged the commander with a gesture. “What is the Terran response?”
The kam smiled. “They are acting cautiously, Ma’am. A reconnaissance in force is moving through hyperspace toward the Third Fleet, while they are moving more ships to their Core worlds.”
“Abandoning their attempts to force us back to Imperial space.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
The High Admiral ordinarily didn’t enter a combat zone with her staff. Traditionally, she and the other planners remained either inside the Empire or on Gwath ka-shlal, but the Sovereign had ordered her to enter Terran space and observe. It had been her plan, after all.
The echelon of Terran cruisers were getting closer, and the vir glanced from their formation to the much larger collection of ships that signified the Third Fleet. “They are approaching detection range, Ma’am,” another staff officer said.
“Aka, I see them, Tabin. Wait,” and she raised a finger as the first cruiser reached what Intelligence estimated was the extreme limit of their sensors. “Now.”
The Imperial Third Fleet vanished from the display.
A pleased grin spread across Vikan t’Klar’s face. The operation against Sol System’s defense AI had proven benefits; by feeding false data directly to the enemy, she would have them diverting their strength to attack shadows. In addition to keeping them off-balance and confused, she had thought, it would eventually exhaust and demoralize the Terran crews. Granted (and she’d made this very clear to the Sovereign), the Terrans would change their sensor algorithms to defeat the operation, but that would take time.
And the Kashlani would exploit the opportunity while it lasted.
“Add to the report, Subcaptain, that the Terrans have been taken in. Have the sensor illusions reappear, there,” and she indicated a point on the other side of the Imperial salient. “We may have surprised them once,” and she grinned again, “so let us see if they are as stupid as they are foolish.”
“Yes, Ma’am,” and the officer went to pass on the orders.
The Sovereign, t’Klar thought, would be pleased. She began studying the master display, judging where would be the best place to attack the Terran Coreworlds while their AIs and planners tried to figure out what was real and what was not.
Aka, the Wangguan System. Twelve Terran lightyears from Sol, and still not as heavily defended as the others . . . yes.
