I think it could be for a water pump, if it was used by a fire brigade.

As far as i can see this Unimog as the option for a PTO at the front to power a pump or another attachment.

Originally the Unimog was invented in the late 1940s as an affordable all purpose truck for farmers, forest workers and construction companies in the efford to rebuild the nation postwar (Unimog is and abbrevation for UNIversal MOtor Gerät - Universal Motorized device). Later it was also used by firebrigades, the police, the military and civil protection agencies. Durable, reliable and versitile, thats why these vehicles are so successful to this day.
