___________________________________________
Queen Alexandra's Birdwing (Ornitoptera alexandeae) - butterflies - endemic of the New Guinea. This species is the largest butterfly in the world, with a wingspan of up to 250 mm!
It is restricted to primary and advanced secondary lowland rain forest and the lower montane secondary rainforest of the Afore area and occurs in range of 0-850 m height. Queen Alexandra's Birdwing is generally found in areas where the forest is light and appears to avoid areas of thorny plants, probably due to their wing size.
Adults generally fly high above the upper forest canopy where they presumably search for flowers of rain forest trees.
The main threat to the species is habitat destruction for agriculture (for example - for oil palm plantations) and timber industries. Very few of the forests potentially affected by threats from logging and oil palm production are protected under Category I and II levels by the IUCN (New 2016)
This species used to feature in the species trade. As a result of trading pressures, this butterflies has been placed on CITES Appendix I in 1987. Nowadays, trade is prohibited with the exception for scientific study.
It's the third YCH in the series of the beautiful life of our planet. I want to show unity of us and nature by our characters. Because it makes breathe high and light!
Thank you for your characters for YCH! Your character is amazing!
