That was first in a Rod Serling episode, later Lost in Space did a look at this theme, then STTNG did one again with Data. The entire point of the Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy was this theme. ...maybe I have been alive too long. off topic but when ages ago, men used to live for six hundred years or so how did they get past the problem of 'heard that one'; during all that time?!
Do they know how the new cheetah appears? I think, broken clothes are enough hint. Not counting cams. I think, this zoo uses cursed items to fill their animal collection. Maybe, there are very few natural animals.
WHat the former boy will do next? I think, its very boring to live on limited territory. And from his expression I see that he still has his human mind.

The question now is: what would I do if I knew what to expect after touching the statue (including life in the zoo with human like awareness). Sure, it would be a restricted life, but it would also be a safe, carefree life in a form that may be closer to oneself than the human appearance.
Not to forget: this is well worked out!

Your beautiful artstyle is one thing, but the way you depict those comic transformations is genius. Really some of the best transformation sequences I've ever seen. It's all about how real it feels. If a zoogoer would suddenly start changing into an animal of course he'd start freaking out and you depict those scenes and emotions so well. Then the zookeepers possibly think that he's an animal that escaped an enclosure? That's such a classic and it works so well here. Astounding work!
