Ah, yes, Anubis.
Bastard son of Osiris and Nephthys. The fan favorite. Half brother of Horus. The judgemental pri--
I have a love-hate relationship with this character, okay?
For the record, I classify him as an African golden wolf instead of a jackal (as most canine mummies from that area are actually golden wolves), but golden wolves are so damn similar to jackals that they might as well be the same thing.
My approach to Anubis is a little different than it used to be. His "code" color (I very much enjoy color-coded characters, sue me) was always a deep purple in my mind, so that didn't change much; he also still has the same eyes as his mother, Nephthys. Here's a little fun fact, though -- I actually drew Anubis' face over a sketch of Osiris' face to make sure he looked a lot like his father! Yeah, I wanted Anubis to basically be "Osiris as a canine with Nephthys' eyes" so that we know who his parents are. I also gave his black fur a more brownish tone so that he resembled Osiris a little bit more.
I also gave Anubis some little accessories, like a bunch of heron feathers fastened to the side of his nemes; Anubis is the judge of the dead, after all, and he weighs the heart of the deceased against the feather of Ma'at. Since Ma'at in TCotC is incorporeal (at this time in the story, anyway) and is basically busy being part of the fabric of the universe, I decided she probably just lends some of her energy towards "stand-in" feathers for Anubis to use instead. Ma'at can still manifest herself as a feather, of course, but that's not a very common thing for her to do.
Something that isn't as obvious from his reference sheet is that Anubis is actually more geared towards being a mage and a healer; most of the other male gods like his brother Horus are very melee oriented, but Anubis would rather cast spells or tend to the injured on the sidelines.
Oh, and apparently he's got this weird ability to switch between being male and female. Hm.
