Back with the kaiju paint pics. This time it's the classic Gamera foe, the Gyaos.
Debuting in 1967's "Gamera vs. Gyaos" (or spelled Gaos back in the day), it terrorized a small village near Mt. Fuji, feasting on livestock and human alike. These actions soon brought the attention of Gamera (specially once it attempted to eat a small child) who fought the bloodthirsty beast. Gamera had to cut this first fight short to ensure the safety of the endangered child, but the two would quickly meet again, in three subsequent confrontations, each one with a different victor. It isn't till the third that Gyaos' achilles heel is realized, that the monster is physically harmed by exposure to sunlight.
The fourth and final battle would be their last, with Gamera emerging victorious after dragging the weakened Gyaos (due to sunlight exposure) into a volcano.
Gyaos would reappear through out the rest of the original (Showa) series, once as a species of "Space Gyaos" (a silver-colored breed on an alien planet) and the rest of the time as stock footage appearances.
When it seemed like Gamera was about to fade into obscurity, (save for MST3k episodes) Kadokawa Daiei decided to revive their dormant property, and the first choice for enemy was (perhaps) his most well-known. The Gyaos were brought back in a big way in 1995's "Gamera, Guardian of the Universe".
This time Gyaos was remodelled into a dangerous species of monster created by Atlantis to (apparently) handle pollution that got out of control, which led to the creation of the Gameras. No longer injured by sunlight exposure, but a mere aversion to it (due to their nocturnally-based eyes), they proved to be a formidable force, mainly due to their ability to evolve and adapt as they matured.
Gamera was able to destroy the initial clutch, but after the events of 1996's "Advent of Legion" began to appear in full force across the globe in the final 90's movie "Revenge of Irys", leading to a more desperate onslaught by Gamera, in an attempt to exterminate their growing menace.
By the very end, despite Gamera's best efforts, the Gyaos population increases, numbering in the thousands. The final scene shows this army of Gyaos descending upon Kyoto, ready to confront Gamera one last time.
When Kadokawa Daiei decided to start over again, with 2006's "Gamera the Brave", the Gyaos were brought in for a brief cameo at the beginning, fighting a Gamera that blows itself up to stop them from destroying a small village.
They are without a doubt the most popular foe for Gamera to face. Whatever the incarnation, the Gyaos are a dangerous monster to confront.
