Pic taken with my iPhone.

En route to work today, me riding shotgun, my eye caught the telltale profile of a boxed up and huddled in terror box turtle in the middle of the parkway road.
I still can't really believe the little critter made it to the double yellow lines without being killed. But as our car passed by it looked like fear had finally gotten to the little thing to the point where it's instinct for closing up and waiting for trouble to end had taken over. It was just sitting in the middle of the road, hoping its shell would keep it safe.
At my insistence, the car was pulled over so I could run back and snatch the turtle from the asphalt when there was a break in the traffic.
Being a box turtle and likely being terrified out of its mind, it didn't crack its shell the slightest bit when I picked it up, so this is the only picture I took. I set it down in the grass, near the treeline, in the direction it looked like the turtle had been crossing the road in.

Little critters that unwittingly cross roads in general.
Back on campus there were several wetland areas, and one of the campus roads passed right between them.
Each spring I'd head out during the night and help the toads get across the curb when they moved locations for mating.
