Mini-tutorial, of sorts, on drawing pterosaur wings on bipedal/humanoid characters (Feat: my gargoyle boi Ken)
So this "tutorial" of sorts was inspired by this fav.me/d2zfz5r brilliant tutorial on Bird wings for humanoids. But, I noticed, there wasn't anyone talking about pterosaur wings.
Please note that I am not a scientist, or professional artist. I did the best I could to heavily research everything here, however, and certainly hope it's reasonably accurate (at least for drawing fantasy creatures.)
A lot of people seem to think that pterosaur wings are just like bat wings, except with three little fingers and one big wing finger instead of the other way around. But actually, pterosaur wings are pretty unique structures in their own right. Pterosaurs were incredibly adapt fliers, with wings best suited for low-speed soaring flight, and that allowed them to reach absolutely immense sizes. (The largest pterosaurs were as tall as a giraffe with wingspans of over 30 feet, the size of a small airplane)
The most difficult thing about pterosaur wings is that, of course, there's no life examples to draw from. I recommend www.pteros.com/ (if you're looking for pose ideas and great examples) and pterosaur.net/ (if you're looking for anatomy and technical information on flight)
