Apparently real Tanukis use their tails to balance themselves as they walk. It has a pretty fun interpretation in eastern mythology where they can balance objects on the very tips of their tail with sort of magical powers~ seems like a pretty useless ability, except for fun! Like building an impossibly balanced pebble tower with my otter boyfriend
