And yes, I've made a chiptune or two in my day. Get your paws on Milkytracker if you can. It's a fun piece of software that I've been fiddling with since I was only a bab. Great old-fashioned way to make music with a computer. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Milkytracker is a very inefficient tool to work with if you want to write songs. It's a powerful tool and really fun, but it took me from middle school until now (I'm pushing 30) to figure out how to really make use of it. Don't waste too much time with the aesthetic, it can get in the way of your creativity and cramp your style.
Oh heck yeah, Renoise is great and lends itself really well to that sort of sound, since it's basically a sampler with superpowers. You can even use high-end VST effects withit, so you'll most likely get a lot out of that.
