Alright, so I guess this was just a sort of experiment? I dunno what to say about this one. It's shorter than any of my other ones. It's written in a 2nd person POV with you as the droplet of rainwater. Given the "character" I tried to just keep things as emotionless and simple as possible, so it's a lot of short sentences and a few questions. Let me know what you think and enjoy being a raindrop!
Also, what do I do for tags on this? I'm gonna wing it, but I'm open to suggestions down below. And sorry it's late by a couple hours. Life stuff came up rather suddenly. Tomorrow's may also be a bit late. Er... today's? Details. Enjoy!
This is it. The others have gathered round with you. It’s such a large crowd this time though, so maybe it’s a bit more humid down below? Or maybe it’s a desert and it’s just the wet season. Either way not much light is getting through down there and you’re almost certain that it’s about time to fall. No thunder though. So it’s probably not going to be too rough. But man is it crowded! All the others are just packed in so close together. Granted it doesn’t matter that much. Who knows? Maybe you’re still going to be stuck up here.
Ah, the first ones have started. Not too heavy this time, but they’re gathered together pretty tightly. Big this time. They are falling below you down into some sort of savannah, or at least that what it looks like; it’s hard to tell from up here. What’s going to happen this time though? Nothing new really. You’ve been through it all before anyway. Some places are certainly worse though. Like swamps. Some many bacteria that just cling to you. Or the ocean where you’ll get all salty inside for who knows how long this time.
Perhaps you’ll be part of a flower this time? No, that’s doubtful. Probably just grass or something and then you’ll evaporate and join up with a whole new crowd. The upside is they’re all familiar faces. The downside is they all look the same as you, so it’s not hard to find a familiar face. Actually, it’s pretty much impossible.
Snowflakes are pretty different. Granted even they all end up the same to a degree. Winters are rough though. Hopefully it’s not snow either. At least as water you can move and change your shape. Snow is just there until it finally isn’t. Maybe it’s months. Maybe it’s tens of thousands of years. Who knows? No matter what the anticipation is gone. What’s the opposite of palpable? That’s what the anticipation is now. That twice over even.
The layers below are falling. The others of your kind are getting clingy. How big this time? It’s hard to tell right now. Either way your size will change once you’re in the air. Most likely. One time you managed to avoid any drops whatsoever! Well, more than one time. Point being it’s not guaranteed.
It’s gentle this time. The others are falling so slowly. Maybe you won’t fall this time? Maybe it’s just not the right time. There’s a lake in the distance. Maybe you’ll be dealing with fish this time.
Oh, look at that; everybody’s falling much faster now. That was pretty sudden. Looks like you won’t reach the lake after all. Maybe you’ll land on an ant. Hopefully not. The bits that get stuck are annoying if you get caught on a rock or something similar.
Look at all these others clinging to you so firmly. It’s like a giant hug that you never ask for but always get. How many have you travelled with before? How many are completely new? Hard to say at this point. By now you’ve likely traveled with most of them. Then again, there are countless.
How many have never experienced the things you have? How many have avoided the ocean? Or never landed among plants? Have any ever dodged a desert or river or lake? Supposedly there are some far beneath the ground in large groups, but you don’t quite believe that. But then again, maybe there are. What a thing it would be to interact with them.
How long have you been falling? When did that start? Are the others aware of it? The ground is approaching. Oh, look at that; another group has joined you. So cramped now. Oh well. Maybe the landing will help. How far is that landing? Oh, maybe the wind will carry you back up. It’s been a while since you were hail. One you hit an acorn. It didn’t break, but it did fall from the tree. Maybe it’s a tree now. Or a squirrel ate it.
The ground is close now. No going back up from this one. Some that had joined you split off already. The air must have been too much for them to hold on. What is that down below? It looks to be something of a bush. Or maybe a strange tree? No, it’s neither. It’s a weird collection of brush. There’s something in front of it. Smoke is rising up. There was a fire before everything started.
But there’s more than that. There’s something else. Something new. What is that? Something held up with branches and covered with leaves. They’re tilted. Well, you’ll find out soon. You’re going straight for it apparently. Time for something new. Unless you land and get splashed off. Unlikely though. You’re near the center. You will likely slide down the leaf onto the ground.
There go some of your companions off the edge, but only a small amount. Most are still with you. And down you go following the curvature of the leaf. Falling again. Oh, look at that. Something is keeping so many of you together. This is very much different. And entirely new experience.
Oh, you and the others have suddenly been shaken. What’s happening now. You’re all getting twisted and turned and rolling over one another. There’s a current now from nowhere. Perhaps it was a damn? No, not quite. You’re flowing under white things that are most certainly not snow. Maybe rock? No, not that either. Those are teeth. You’re being drank now apparently.
Ah, there it is. Saliva has joined you. It’s like you, but it’s still very different. A sudden current pulls you one way, then another. You’re moving back and forth in a mouth. Some of the water is ticking to its tongue. It was dry before.
Now another current and suddenly you’re falling again. But the fall is contained now and there is only darkness. Ah, but now you’ve stopped. You’re inside of something. So this is what you are this trip down: a drink for something. How long will you be part of this thing? Possibly a while. Maybe until it dies. Or much sooner. You aren’t able to do much of anything. This is it.
