I know Weed is always under a LOT of scrutiny because of Yoshihiro’s skewed altruistic views, but this dumb baby Japanese dog changed my life. He made me want to strive to become a better person. He was my first super emotional, super forgiving anime protag and while I was too young to understand the glaring flaws in the writing for Weed’s character, I can’t hate him. I can’t. To me, in my brain, he’ll always stand out as a pup who really wants the best for everyone and means no harm unless it comes down to no other alternative. And not in the way that Yoshihiro did it; I mean in a much more genuine and sincere way that doesn’t involve literal stupidity. If it were up to me I would tear down what GDW did, save for the baseline of every arc, and rewrite it. ESPECIALLY for my good boy Weed. He was done dirty and didn’t deserve Yoshihiro’s piss poor character development.

me: rabble rabble weed is a little bastard grrr growl
me in the part of my mind that still remembers watching gdw for the first time like 10 years ago: i can't say i will ever appreciate the narrative's handling of weed's altruism given it's eternally unquestioned, always treated intext as if it's correct, and nets very few consequences for him, but him being a bit of a bleeding heart compared to his dad makes sense and may have been the most effective way to separate their characters from one another. gng was about war against an unrelenting foe - there was no room for patience or understanding towards the enemy. but gdw is about fascism and the acknowledgment that, irregardless of how evil he is, a warmongering dictator is a person with his own sense of being. it could've been done more effectively, and i wish it had been, but weed's willingness to perceive of his enemies as more then obstacles given they were less forces of nature and more violent cultists, was a refreshing and necessary stage in the franchise's development. also lmao cute blue puppy wuppy

THANK YOU. That's another thing about Weed and GDW in general that strikes the right strings with me. Yes. I agree with you entirely and you put it into words that I found very difficult to express into words.
Yoshihiro had the right ideas in concept! I'll give him that. But wrote them not good to say the least.
