Quicksilver- quick pen sketch with a little color
Here's a pen sketch (that I tossed some color onto for the hell of it) of Sylvia Thorpe, aka Quicksilver from Lot Six/Caterwaul Red. Twenty year old college student who has the unique distinction of having both her parents share a history with the government agency who started this genetic mess 20-some-odd years ago. All the other Lot Six members only have one parent from the study.
Her form shifts into a mercury-like metal which can be shaped according to her mood or will. It can be solid or liquid. Try to throw a punch at her and you might just hit solid metal, or your hand might hit something akin to a liquid-filled uniform. She's able to form spikes, blades or quills through her uniform by forcing her metallic skin through the weave of the fabric (or small holes in the armor plates). Then, just like mercury, the metal rejoins outside the uniform into whatever shape she wants.
The actual uniform will be black and very dark red. I was just too lazy to really put any effort into the uniform in this picture since, well, it's just a quick sketch. Enjoy!

Well Jim, you've done it again....
I know you keep pushing yer boundaries and all that - but this is the first time I can remember you made a female look... uncuddly.
Now, there's inviting like demon Penance, but this is the first one I don't think I'd wanna snuggle with given the chance.... Yow!
Not that its a bad thing =D Means you're expanding as an artist.

Her uniform is perforated throughout, including the armored panels. She would essentially force the liquid metal through the openings in the weave, only to have it join up outside the clothing. This way, she can make spikes without tearing her clothes to shreds. She can also completely cover over her clothing if need be.
Her power is actually pretty unstable, in the sense that it is controlled by her emotional state of mind. One can conceal their true emotions consciously, but this form cannot lie. If she's pissed, but trying to play it cool, you're going to know she's pissed because her outward appearance will reflect that.
When she's solid, there's no problems with physical contact. When any part of her is liquified, contact can lead to poisoning.
Her normal state when shifting into this form resembles her non-powered form, except smooth and shiny.

Not really. She's making the barbs through the weave patterns in the clothing. Technically, if she was strapped down to a table and wrapped in tape and burlap, she could slowly force her liquified form through the materials to ultimately appear outside the bound clothing.
She's not a machine at all. She just has the rare peculiarity of having 2 parents that were involved in government agency experiments many years ago, which has resulted in an unusual paranormal ability. She's a 20-year-old college student; I don't know of any of those that are all work and no play!
Jim
So what your saying is that contact with her while in this form even in a friendly way would be considered very dangerous and maybe fatally toxic
So I guess asking her for a friendly BJ would be out of the question even if I wore a double thick latex condom?
BTW Great pic and I really like the way you drew her head, it looks like a fancy metal helmet from the Medieval/Renascence era.
I would love to see a close up drawing of her face & head area sometime in the future when you find the time.
Keep up the fantastic work.
Oh yeah one last thing the Penance/Punisher T-shirts are ready and should be shipped from Bangkok Thailand any day now in time for AC & MFM I'll make sure to throw yeah a few dollars you way soon.

"I was just too lazy to really put any effort into the uniform in this picture" he says as he draws the individual pinholes in the uniform. Hardiman, you magnificent bastard, I wish I was half as lazy as you.
In any case, you do continue to do great work. I really like how you show a metallic sheen with your coloring. Even if it was just a sketch you do the lighting on Quicksilver's metallic body and the shading across her clothing well. Even if with her ability she could presumably look any number of different ways I like how you pictured her here. As much as Jeremy looked like a metal sculpture (like Da Vinci's Bronze Horse, only an anthro otter) Sylvia's pose here is more dynamic and I think it makes her look more lively. I think that's a good feel for both of the characters, considering the nature of their powers.
Speaking of which I think Quicksilver's powers are some of the most versatile of the Lot Six group and I'm really interested in seeing what you do with them. You've already described a scene in the comments of a combat situation but there's much more to it than that. For example, if she can turn her body into liquid to pass through holes like those in her costume (that was a very clever idea, by the way) than she can presumably get into or out of anything that's not sealed air-tight. Likewise I wonder if she's able to liquefy and solidify into any kind of shape or form. I suppose it depends on how much fine control she has over her ability. As a side note I know when people asked you these kind of questions in the past you haven't had much time for downtime, but have you seen Terminator 2? Differences abound but I'm still reminded of the T-1000.
Sylvia's character is very interesting too, considering she's the only one whose parents were involved with Project Orange Crate. Since she's got the closest personal relationship to the project and if her parents talked to her about it I presume she'd be the most knowledgeable about Lot Six's situation. I'm particularly curious to see how this affected her relationship with her parents or even with the other members if they find out how Sylvia's parents were involved.
You know the more I go back and read what you've written about Caterwaul in the past the more and more I'm interested in the comic. You've really established a huge world of possibilities and there's so much we don't know, like how extensive Project Orange Crate was or even the purpose behind it, not to mention we know the history and abilities of these characters but really not all too much about them. I am definitely going to have to check it out as soon as I can.
On a similar note I'm really interested in seeing the new form of Blackout too. Denise's transformation is the only one that doesn't involve some kind of unknown metallic compound so I'm curious to see how you handle it. I'm also curious to see how "fleshed out" you make her default transformed appearance.
Anyways, thanks again for sharing your work! Sorry for rambling so much, but it is really awesome to see how much work you've put into this and I'm really excited about seeing where you go from here. Good luck with everything! ^^

Well, she can't change her actual form (such as turning into a puddle or a ball). She retains her basic shape, but can change the nature of the metallic "skin". The most extreme thing she could do, body-wise, would be something like forcing her physical form through numerous tiny openings in a material in order to appear outside it. This happens in one of the stories; she escapes being bound, only to discover her clothing is still inside the bag. Major embarrassment ensues.
While her ability might be one of the most powerful ones (although I think several of the other members might claim that title), she has several drawbacks. Because her ability stems from her emotions, she must remain emotionally neutral. In order to prevent herself from turning into this metallic monstrosity, she has to remain cool and aloof at all times. No rage, no sadness, no overwhelming joy. None of that is permitted.
All the members of Lot Six (as well as Lots Eight and Nine) had parents who were involved in those crazy government agency experiments; Sylvia just happens to have had BOTH her parents involved in it, rather than only one.
Several of the different characters have abilities that don't involve metallic forms. In fact, several of them have similar abilities, mostly due to slight variations in the chemicals used in the experiments (hence, why Denise, Monique, Sheryl and Rahne have powers that originate from a single formula, though each version was changed and tweaked to produce different results). The only characters whose forms are metallic are Jeremy, Sylvia and Dean.
Thanks for your interested inquiries! It's nice when someone has a keen amount of interest in something that isn't porn!

I'm impressed with how much you have your story figured out, that you're able to describe individual scenes like that. And that made me laugh partly just because it's hilarious but it's also good to see you're keeping your sense of humor for this comic. Again, it seems like if this were handled the wrong way it could tread into Dark Age territory but the more you talk about it the more it seems like you have a good grasp on what you want to do and how to keep it from being angst ridden. I just read your overview with the comment about more down-to-earth humor and I think that's the best fit for the comic.
One of the balancing points for the general atmosphere of the story is the character's abilities and I really like the way you're managing those. Despite the fact that they can do something extraordinary Jeremy has to deal with losing his sense of touch, Sylvia has to maintain control of her emotions, and Denise has to deal with...well, being an energy vampire. I'm especially interested in seeing how you have Sylvia's form reflect the emotions she's feeling when her control slips. Obviously spikes and blades are indicative of anger, which shows up in her backstory, but I'm curious as to what more complex emotions like the embarrassment you mentioned above will do to her.
And ack! I had gotten the mistaken impression both her parents being involved meant on the research side as well as the subject side. Like I've said before I do think you have a great premise here and I'm really curious as to how much power the DABRD wields and how deep the project goes. Also, ahah! I'm really glad you mentioned the names of the other characters-I'm sorry but the original Caterwaul run was a bit before my time so I'm really only getting familiar with it from the new material. It's great to learn more information as I stumble across more .txt files in the group, thank you so much for chronicling the events and history of the comic. It's really fascinating to get an creator's perspective.
Now, I should be the one thanking you. I'm just glad I'm not pestering you with my chattering. Not a lot of people respond so well to comments and it's not often I see someone working on something of this magnitude, never-the-less actually getting to talk to the creator like this. It sounds like the first time you did really get the chance to explore your world and I hope that turns around this time because just talking to you it's clear you put a lot of work into your world and your characters.
Anyways, thanks again for being so awesome! You're really keeping me on my toes, and now of stuff in the group to look through. Good luck with everything! ^^

Well, the Caterwaul stories will cover a few different categories, although the primary one will be science-fiction. After all, anything involving walking and talking animal people must surely be sci-fi, right?
Each story runs about 3 issues. The first story is mostly action and some drama. The second story has the Lot Six folks in it, so it's a bit on the "heroics" side of things, but definitely firmly rooted in sci-fi and action. The third story features alternate realities and introduces readers to characters like Onika and Treska, as well as telling their full story. And the fourth story has several elements of paranormal activity and horror in it. I'm trying to cover a wide scope of venues that I enjoy, but at the same time, I don't want the stories to get overly dark. They're certainly realisitc and gritty, but I don't want readers to start slashing their wrists due to depression after reading a storyline that's too dark!
Glad you like the sketches, though! Stay tuned for more details on Caterwaul...
