Brewery: Kiuchi Brewery
Name: Hitachino Nest Red Rice
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale
Origin: Japan
Bottle: 11.2 fl.oz.
ABV: 7%
Appearance: A fairly opaque dark amber; numerous tiny bubble streams
Pours: pretty standard, minor flare-up of a head, died down fairly quickly.
Smell: grasses, floral, possibly rye or buckwheat, maybe a bit of pecan shell.
Taste: Some nice umami notes, some berries and Rainier cherries off in the wings, A supporting role from the rye or buckwheat taste in the background peaks out to say a quick “hi.” All mingling quite nicely in scene of a low-key party with your typical beer-cereal grains and alcohol .
Currently listening to some mellow Pink Floyd and it’s a nice little auditory accent.
Mouthfeel: velvety smoothness atop alcohol sharpness wrapped in a bright CO2 shell.
Rating: 8.75 I have to admit I’ve had this ale before and if you’re expectations of Asian beers comes from your experiences with brews such as Asahi and Ki-Rin and you’re thinking ‘oh. Another *sex-in-a-canoe beer’ your prejudices are going to get a whiplash so sharp your ego will need to go to the ER for a neck-brace. I mean yes it’s still a rice based beer and rice isn’t exactly known for being a juggernaut of flavour but they judiciously extract every bit of flavor they can and then perform a Sensei level feat of culinary Feng Shui to balance out the flavors at all stages of consumption.
Now I can’t say what red rice is going to do to a beer, or what exactly it is(other than purported to be apparently quit healthy -in its red rice yeast form- as having numerous cancer fighting agents ad well as lowering cholesterol, an anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant. Traits which I’m sure are negated in the brew process, but, oh well 🤷♀️ ), nor about the history of beer brewing in Japan or what laws they have that affect what they can and cannot do.
If you want the more historical and technical aspects of what there is out there to drink I’ve found no one better on FA than
Inkpot https://www.furaffinity.net/user/inkpot/. Seriously if he doesn’t know what he’s talking about he knows where to find answers. I honestly can’t figure out how to praise him without sounding like Kaltag from the Balto animated movie.
So いただきます**
and 乾杯!***

Hitachino is not one of my favorite beers, liquors, or wines after all my experience. It was definitely a waste of money for a beer of low quality and taste on the palate it just lost the mark at the price point. The only alcohol I truly enjoy from Japan is suntory whiskey, absolute fire. But look out for the next day shits.
