White Nose Syndrome (WNS) is an deadly fungal disease affecting bat species across the world. It causes bats to waste precious energy during hibernation, waking up frequently, and often starving to death. The fruiting bodies of the fungus only show up in the late stages. Their appearance means that the bat is already experiencing drastic changes to it's internal chemistry and basic sensory functions.
It's... a really horrible pathogen.
Hikers, cavers, spelunkers, and cavern tourists are encouraged to check on the status of WNS in their area before venturing underground. If the fungus is prevalent in your nearby caves, avoid spreading it further. Wash all clothes, shoes, equipment, and bags after you return from a cave known to have high levels of the fungus's spores.

This specific illustration spawned from my unabashed love of medieval drawings from bestiaries, illuminated manuscripts, and the like. Turns out that my favorite little bois are woefully under-represented in medieval texts, so I set out to draw some bats. Bats made me think of my cavern explorations, which reminded me of WNS, which made me sad, which spawned this 2-hour piece of work. Bats are your friends. They cronch the cricket and make little flap flaps.
