It kinda reminds me of the first views of "The Galactic Lay line" from the ancient Anime "Outlaw Star." I can easily get lost in the various little "Details" that seem to indicate structure of some sort.

Well, kinda. I believe what you're referring to is Gene Starwind's "Caster." A sort of close quarter shotgun like weapon that shoots shells, but also delivers magical "Spells" to dispatch his enemies or protect his friends. The weapon is so ancient and seeped in mythology, that even Gene isn't quite sure how to use it properly, and many of the spells he casts can and will take part of his soul from him. One of the most humorous and informative episodes that tells about Gene's weapon, takes place on a mystical "Spa" planet where gene has to trade favors in order to get some more shells.
