"The Vulcan Academy Murders", by Jean Lorrah. Pretty good, but probably looooong out of print. It meshed well with some episode events, and fleshed out some facts about Vulcan, it's civilization, and Spock's family.

Apparently, Sarek's quite a personable Vulcan. He's pretty understanding of how and why less-logical races live like they do, and even cracks the occasional joke when teaching university classes! It seems when Vulcans grow older they often realize logic is really just a tool in their lives rather than the entire goal, and mellow out some.

Honestly the only episode i remember of spock's dad is the second one where he comes back to give his father an emotional balance because his senility was giving him extreme bouts of emotions.

But then we're talking about stuff i saw over 35 years ago

That was a Next Generation episode, appropriately called "Sarek". Picard shored his control up.

The resulting emotional maelstrom that hit the Captain seems acted out by Patrick Stewart using every scrap of his Royal Shakespeare Company experience and training! It's a legendary and moving Star Trek scene that I keep in my Favorites menu:

'Sokay. And now you have that scene whenever you want it. I've also got the one where Picard argues with Sarek until he lose his composure and can't deny the illness anymore. But that's less moving.

I think the episode was at least nominated for an award.
