Shani Uzuri couldn't help breathing, nervously as she drove the old Land Rover across the plains of the Serengeti. She was about to make a big revelation after eleven years, and perhaps face the consequences of such. Eleven years ago, Shani had found a native tribe of lions living out on the Savannah, and had gone to discover her heritage. Given her amazing athletic prowess and respect for tradition, it hadn't taken her long to win them over and for them to accept her as one of the tribe. She particularly impressed the chief of the tribe; a handsome red-maned lion named Hamidi. Then... let's just say the two of them got to know each other pretty well. Shani also had the pleasure of meeting Hamidi's wife; the lovely Jamila; and the two of them got along pretty well too. However, a month later, Shani discovered that she was soon to be a mother, and her life flipped completely upside down.
After an exhausting nine months, Shani gave birth to twin cubs; a boy named Riyo, and a girl named Kijana. Though apprehensive at first, Shani discovered she had a real knack for motherhood, and raised her cubs to be strong, smart, and self-reliant like her. Kijana was exceptionally strong and fast for an eleven year old, and Riyo could imitate all kinds of animal noises. Nowadays, Shani felt confident enough to let them tag along with her on her less perilous expeditions. But the one thing that she couldn't do was tell them the truth about their father. Ever since they were born, Shani had simply told them that she didn't really know who their father was; which, in a way, was true. The cubs bought it, and as they grew up, stopped asking questions about their father. Shani had been confident that she would never need to tell them the truth.
Now, however, things were different. Out of nowhere, Shani had received a message from the tribe stating that Queen Jamila had passed away from a sudden and severe illness, and the tribe had fallen into chaos. They needed someone to step in and help restore order. Reluctantly, Shani accepted; and decided to finally tell Riyo and Kijana the truth about where they really came from. Speaking of which, Shani realized that they were finally there; so she stopped the car and shut off the motor.
"Riyo... Kijana..." she said, "We're here." In the backseat, Kijana stirred from her nap.
"We're here...?" she asked, "Oh, right! I remember!"
"Where exactly is here?" asked Rio.
"The land of our people." said Shani, "C'mon, Kids; they'll be waiting for us." She stepped out of the car and into the heat of the afternoon. Since it was so hot, Shani and Kijana were just wearing shorts, boots, and white sleeveless shirts, while Riyo had gone shirtless. As they walked away from the car, Shani noticed a male lion standing in the distance; his red mane indicated who he was. Nervously, Shani led Riyo and Kijana to where he was standing.
"Shani!" exclaimed Chief Hamidi, "Asante wema hatimaye umefika! Kabila lote limngojea kwa hamu kuwasili kwako." He then noticed Riyo and Kijana flanking the lioness. "Subiri kidogo ..." he said, "Watoto hawa ni akina nani?" Shani sighed and put a hand on each of the cubs' shoulders as she said,
"Hamidi, ungana na Riyo na Kijana Uzuri. Ni watoto wetu." Hamidi's mouth fell open and his eyes grew wide. Then a massive smile formed on his muzzle. The cubs looked confused, so Shani took one more deep breath, then said, "Riyo... Kijana... meet your dad."
"Wha...?" Riyo gasped as his mouth fell open. Kijana too, was stunned at this revelation.
"Wow..." she breathed. After a moment, she regained herself and addressed Hamidi. "Are you really a tribe chief?" she asked.
"Ndio..." Hamidi replied, "Mimi ndiye kiongozi wa kabila langu."
"Yes..." Shani translated, "He is the leader of his tribe."
"That... is... so cool!" Riyo said, "And you're really our father?"
"Nina ... nadhani mimi ndiye." said Hamidi. He then spread his arms and said, "Karibuni, Watoto; Karibu nyumbani kwangu."
"Welcome to my home." Shani translated, "So, Hamidi; is there any chance we can find a place to settle in?"
"Bila shaka!" said Hamidi. He gestured with his arm and said, "Nifuate! Kijiji chetu kiko hivi!" Knowing what he meant from the gesture, Riyo and Kijana raced ahead, eager to catch their first glimpse of the village. Shani stayed behind, however. Sure enough, Hamidi turned to her and said, "Wao ni watoto wa ajabu." He then looked her in the eyes with a serious face and said, "Je, ni zetu kweli?"
"Ndio..." said Shani, nervously, "Ni watoto wetu kweli. They really are our children." Hamidi's anger faded into uncertainty.
"Do... you think..." he asked in English, "They will... accept me... as their father...?" Shani broke a small smile and said,
"I'm sure they'll love you, Hamidi." She then sighed and said, "I... I'm so sorry about Jamila." Hamidi took her chin in his hand and said,
"It's alright... Even if she had known, I'm sure she would have loved them too." He straightened up and said, "Come now; we have much to discuss." Shani accepted Hamidi's hand, and together they walked towards the village.
