...so i guess i'm posting old portfolio bits for a few days ...
So, my last couple years at Hanna-Barbera were fun (at first) -
i was getting tossed all the cherry projects - they said "Were doing a TV special of Ray Bradbury's 'The Halloween Tree' and we want it to look like nothing that's ever been done before ! You'll head up the development and models team. And take your time ..." Pinch me!
i did all sorts of experimental styles, eventually coming-up with a weird hybrid of Edward Gorey and Disney and Joe Mugnaini's illustrations to the book - familiar but different but familiar. Studio head approved... and Ray Bradbury himself approved this design style !!!! - so yeah, i wuz walking on clouds that day . But it didn't end-up happening cuz ...
i had designed full model sheets with turns, poses and expressions before doing this rough-looking group pose.
..... so the movie would have started off the warm colours americana as in pic 1 and then most of the movie would have moved into cold colours and more dream-like animation styles to match the mood of the book... again here a bit of Edward Gorey and Disney, but the book illustrations by Joe Mugnaini are the main influence.
...
Sadly, this version didn't make it to screen.
We were starting into putting together final models when i was called off the project - Ted Turner owned HB at that point, and had brought Captain Planet with him - and they had given a couple old veteran model artists the DiC models to re-design - and they had blown the budget producing nothing usable ! so i was given a week (might have been two) to come up with a new style for the series and then do complete models sheets with turns and expressions for all all the main characters, bad guys, and prop styles. Then another couple weeks getting the design crew in place ... so when i got back to Halloween Tree the producer had got cold feet and had it re-designed to look like a saturday morning cartoon . It was a disappointment. So i resigned from the project to work on other new series development.
There's a version on uTub ....

i'm no rocket surgeon - maybe the "we want it to look like nothing that's ever been done before !" tyop brass directive and top brass approval would have flopped - - maybe the director was right to make it look vanilla - the script did win an Emmy, so maybe the art had to be not-too-different for the script to take centre stage ? ( Although i think in the original style the script would still have been centre stage.)
