A quick WIP of a concept I'm working on that I'm considering doing more with in the future; expect more doodles like this down the line as I flesh out the world a bit before I settle on what, exactly, I wind up doing with all this!
In this world, there are spirits. Call them what you like -- faerie, demon, jinn -- every culture the world over has a name for these curious apparitions, though there are few as numerous and as powerful as the yokai, the demons of the east, and fewer still as great as Oboro, the Moon's Mist -- supposedly the last living Nekomata, a split-tailed feline spirit whose gifts are possession and pyrokinesis.
Grown enormous in spiritual power and physicality through countless eras of warfare, grown large and indolent in countless eras of peace, Oboro now relies on willing mortals to sustain herself via possession -- though the confines of a human body are proving to be an increasingly cozy fit for the great yokai.
Still, there are battles yet to be fought, even in an age of supposed peace; forced into conflict with a spirit from foreign shores and their mortal envoys, she has chosen a pair of favored humans herself, an assassin and an acolyte, both masters of their particular craft -- Azumi, a swordswoman known for defeating her foes with but a single strike, and Mitsuki, a shrine maiden whose boundless faith and keen mind are weapons unto themselves.
They're both still working out the physical kinks of being possessed by a gigantic fire demon, for the record.
