Ghosts of the Forest
You stumble upon a clearing. It's dark out and very cold. Extremely cold. Unusually cold for this time in October. That is said to be the work of ghosts. However, you shake that off. That's ridiculous; ghosts aren't real. You continue in. Your better instincts are telling you to run. Something seems off about this forest, but your curiosity grows. You keep walking on the very soft grass towards the oddly shaped trees and thick bushes. You hear something rustle. It startles you and you stop. You look around for it and can see barely anything in front of your face. You push through. More noise. Sounds like the footsteps of tiny animals. You chuckle to yourself that you actually got scared of a few tiny squirrels. You stumble upon a clearing. Wait, you already did. Are you going in circles? You go to turn around, but the way through is missing. Where is your trail? You feel a chill go down your back, as if a sapient breeze of wind flew by. You turn around and walk forward. You feel something hit your shoe. You look down and see... a raccoon? That's what's been making all this noise? But, you heard other animals. The raccoon makes a dog-like growl and runs off. You must have hurt it.
The pitter-patter of animal paws is heard again. What, is it telling its friends that a big, scary human hurt it? How silly. The noises grow louder. The forest seems to be closing in. You're not claustrophobic, but you're feeling trapped by the increasingly smaller space you're now surrounded by. Trees can't move. Bushes can't enclose you in an area. This must be the work of- No! That's absurd! Japan must just have those weird moving plants! Your heart is racing in your chest. You try and claw your way out of the clearing. The plants won't budge. You knew you should have waited to explore the forest in the morning! But, the news stories of strange occurrences at night caught your eye and you had to witness one for yourself.
You hear a pained howl from far away. But, aren't all the wolves in Japan dead? Soon, the playful yip of a fox. The loud caw of a magpie. Growling dogs. Hissing cats. What's going on in here? Did the raccoon tell all its friends that you accidentally hit him with my shoe? Are all of them angry with me? The chorus of animal noises grew louder and closer. They're setting upon you. It suddenly becomes quiet, all punctuated with an odd whining noise. You stand there, breathing heavily. What does this all mean? What's going to happen to you? You drop to your knees, clasp your hands, and beg for forgiveness. You tell the raccoon that you're sorry. You hear an annoyed growl in the distance. You're not sure what you said wrong. Maybe the raccoon doesn't want to forgive you.
You hear soft padding again. The raccoon walks up to you. His brows are furrowed. You apologize to his face. He snarls at you. Why do your apologies anger him so? Soon, he followed by larger footsteps. You slowly pan your view up to see the extinct Japanese Wolf staring at you. Their eyes glowing a bright yellow. Afterwards, a white three-tailed fox appears. They had a wide, toothy grin on their face. They seemed like they were having fun, but the large teeth and obvious malice behind them told you otherwise. Many other animals appeared. A weird-looking turtle. A small, fat snake. A two-tailed cat.
Thick fog shoots out and surrounds you. You look around panicked. You were wrong. Ghosts are real, aren't they? It would explain the "strange occurrences" in the woods!
A bright blue ghost dog appears over all of them. He glares at you with an intense fury. All of the animals eyes glowed yellow. They stared holes through you while slowing walking forward. You backed up with each step. The lighting grew dim, you were barely able to see their shapes, only the lights of their eyes. More eyes appeared behind them of creatures you were sure you never wanted to witness. Soon, they opened their mouths and said in unison: LEAVE.
The trail reappeared and you made no second thoughts about it. You ran out of there. You saw your car and hopped in. Seconds later you were down the road, heading to your hotel. You kept checking your rearview mirror to see if they were following you. The night sky cleared up and you could see the stars again. You learned your lesson about curiosity killing the cat.
(I'm sorry, I got burnt out at the end of that story. Ffffffffff)
I actually drew and finished this on October 1st! Talk about your great spooky month starters!
Long story short (I just wrote the story up there in 20 minutes, so it's not completely related to the art), Rigby and his friends are territorial over their forest home and any humans setting foot their will get the fright of their lives. This image is the aftermath of that.
(Whether the picture is actually spooky or not is subjective. Hush about it in the comments. I know my art style is cutesy, so the intended effect isn't there, but dang, way to be a party pooper, Joe.)
Bunch new characters in here! Wonder who they all are! 👀
(Update: Because of me screwing up my art schedule for the reveals of all the characters, my "Youkai Month" will be next month now. Sorry, folks. 😞)
