I'm rereading Crockett Johnson's lovely Barnaby, a very 1940s comic strip recently gathered in book form. It's the story of a kid and his fairy godfather, Mr O'Malley, who's ... really going to show you some amazing magic once certain minor problems clear out of the way. He's certainly got the soul of a grifter, anyway, and this drives a lot of fun serial-comic adventuring. The strip is starkly minimalist and so I was intimidated to try drawing a panel; it's at least as tough as Peanuts to do. Anyway, this is from a daily strip in which Barnaby and Mr O'Malley are about to run across a demon, and some helpful squirrels are trying to get them out of danger. Mr O'Malley has no idea what's going on, and never does. And, dang but Johnson designs a lovely squirrel.
