Madness is the Gift That Has Been Given to Me
no.9: Prof. Stein - Soul Eater
Some of the best mad scientist scenarios are less about the doctor giving into sheer insanity, but their struggle to quell the ever looming madness within and no one sums this up better then Soul Eater's Franken Stein. Well okay, maybe some others do but in terms of this countdown, he's the one that fits the bill!
These types of scenarios have always captivated me. In depth dives into the human psyche and how we're all one bad day away from going crazy. Doesn't matter how calculating and in control you think you are, there's always something that can drive one to crack... starting to sound more like the Joker now, but Soul Eater tackles these topics in really interesting ways. Hell, the entire series is essentially about mental issues and not how to stop them but simply how to cope with and manage one's inner demons. Even if that means putting a screw into your head!
With it's overall heavy topic of mental issues and it's overt spooky themes, Soul Eater is a series close to my heart and one I've sadly added very little of to these countdowns throughout the years but when it came to this one I knew I couldn't leave Stein out. His entire appearance is "mad scientist" to a tee and while I'm not sure if I pulled it off or not, I really tried to capture the manga's sketchy, off putting art style that appears when things start really getting crazy because it's always looked awesome to me. Either way, I'm pretty happy with this one.

Ahh, nice to see Soul Eater still getting some remembrance after all this time! Soul Eater was my very second anime I watched when younger, first being Bakugan, but it was definitely the one that got me interested in mental health. I showed the show to a friend of mine and he LOVED it! Especially Stein; As crazy as Stein is, he’s no slouch in everything else. Definitely love the art style and details you chose for this~
It's a great series and for as over the top as it is, it does a really good job at representing mental issues and the importance of balance in one's life and thanks. I tried mimicking the manga's style whenever madness starts taking over. If you've not read the manga, I highly suggest you do.
Nice work. I was talking about this on Twitter the other day, but some of the scariest scenes in Soul Eater come from Stein's mental breaks from the Madness. I still remember the bathroom scene where Stein is watching himself slowly turn into the Kishin and his bathroom starts to fill with Madness and blood. What made it truly scary tho was the fact that we knew as viewers his break was coming and that we were gonna lose him to Madness since throughout the show he was already portrayed as mentally unstable.
Again, some of the best scenarios are getting to see the mental struggle of one trying to overcome their inner madness and in Stein's case, the fact that we were left hanging so long on whether or not he'd fully succumb was intriguing as even in his darkest moments he held on for a surprising amount of time.
Well I personally theorize him hanging in like that to his version of a coping mechanism along with Spirit. If what was shown him his flashback were true, Stein already had felt himself as sort of a pariah among his peers because of his angst and pursuit of knowledge. Kind of like Mayuri from Bleach. But unlike Mayuri, Stein feel some regret for his actions. At least that’s how I interpret it. Also, sorry for clogging up your comments. Was just trying to have a convo is all.
I assumed Stein was more the pariah just from the fact that he was unhinged when he was younger and being at the DWMA smacked some sense into him and he learned to control his psychosis, and since he's been the one who's dealt with their inner demons more than anyone, he was capable of withstanding the Kishin for longer, but that's me and you're fine. You didn't do anything wrong. If you wanna have a conversation, you can always note me or contact me on Discord. Jolly Jack#2142
