Another current project. Just finished installing the tires and chain. Also installed one pedal. The second crank is so stripped out though that you can just stick the pedal threads in without even turning it. And with about a millimeter of play. So not sure how I'm fixing that one. Thinking of trying some metal glue, as this won't be a daily rider anyway. Also the seat tube is rusted in place, and the previous owner broke off the stem bolt when trying to remove the handlebars. Not sure how I'm gonna solve those issues. At the moment I've wedged wood between the handlebars and stem to hold it in place.
As I said, when completed this won't be a road-worthy bike. Just looking to make it complete. Lots of things will need to be done for it to be road worthy again, even after I've fixed the issues listed above. The rims on the wheels are rusted through in many places, so they would need replacing. The crank needs removal to clean/replace the bearings and other components(turns freely, but you can hear the rust and sediment inside it). The tab on front of the seat where its bolted to the springs is broken. Leather is shot, but that's really not a big deal. Needs reflectors, etc. the patina looks a lot better in person, and I have no plans to repaint it. Might rough it up a bit more and clearcoat it, but I want to keep the old paint job.
You can really tell this bike saw many years of use. Its got at least two coats of paint, and so many dings its impossible to count. Its a solid bike too. They really built these old Schwinns to last. You've got to keep in mind this thing has almost 70 years of wear and weathering. Yet is still serviceable. And will be technically still ride-able when it's completed. Nearly all damage is the result of a previous owner trying to disassemble it, or the result of 70 years of wear. The wheels and crank still turn fine. The coaster brakes still work. There's no cracks or damage to the frame at all

The deep rust is inside the wheels between the tire and the rim. My guess is the bike spent a long period outside, and since that area wasnt exposed to the wind and sun it stayed wet. But its so advanced some of the bolts holding the spokes have started forcing their way through the rim because of how thin the metal has gotten.
Lol I found one in that condition behind where I worked once. Back wheel was completely fubar. There were no bearings left at all. And there was about a mm of play between the axle and the wheel. Also one of the rear brake arm posts had been sheered off, and the rear tire, which was supposed to be a knobby mtn bike tire, was worn completely smooth/flat in the center. Also the rear section was spraypainted dark blue at some point, an excellent contrast to the red front section. Oh, and the rear derailleur was hanging off. Had no front brakes, and I'm pretty sure both gear shifters were broken. I've never seen a more broken bike. Even for free it was a total loss, haha. I couldn't salvage ANYTHING from it.
