Once on the raging seas I rode
The storm was loud. the night was dark
The ocean yawn'd, and rudely blow'd

Deep horrour then my vitals frose.
Death struck. I ceas'd the tide to slem.

It's actually "...I ceased the tide to stem." The hymn is called Star of Bethlehem, written in 1805 by Henry Kirke White. The author died in school at the age of 21.
