2010 Self Portrait - Pencils
Finally finally FINALLY got an idea in my head that seems to be working. Every hear I do a self portrait of sorts that symbolically sums up the year before. This time around I decided to try a theme with stones and bricks.
At first I wanted to maybe do something with water, but water didn't quite fit the things I wanted to portray, but stones do. Last year I had quite a few (metaphoric) stones thrown at me, usually when my back was turned. But you can do a lot more with stone than just throw it at people. You can build with it. Some zen masters even arrange them in an exercise to find peace. Stone can also weigh you down if you carry too much. In the end though, a stone is just a tool and it is up to you to decide how to employ it. Will you build or will you break down? So this time around the portrait holds symbolic images of burden, building, calm, and spite.
If you're going to be at Elliott's this weekend you might get to see me working on this. When I have the inked version finished, this will get moved to scraps.

I have a lot of respect for one who chooses to be so open about herself, and who puts forth effort like this not just to write about it, but to produce the proverbial 'thousand words' for the public.
I know I say it a lot, but thank you, Gen, for sharing your talent with us.

The concept of the image is very solid. In fact, it's quite deep, too! (It also reminds me that I don't think about these sorts of things enough.)
I look forward to seeing the completed version, but if I may address one concern: The hand holding the rock looks a little... off.
That isn't to say that I'm a master of drawing hands, because I'm more likely the opposite. =P
