Time to begin the last stretch to Halloween!
Two weeks passed before Henri was released from the hospital.
Even though the regular visits helped to endure the wait, he still was very happy to finally be out.
And the cooks of La fourchette d'argent were very happy too.
The restaurant had been closed to celebrate, but now, the following day, everyone was preparing the restaurant for tonight's opening.
In the kitchen, Bock was preparing the appetizers, humming happily.
In his concentration and his humming, he didn't hear the air vent cover snap under the pressure of something that got through, and was going straight on him.
The shouts and violent noises coming from the kitchens alerted the cooks, who ran to see what was happening.
And froze in shock and horror at the spectacle.
A huge, amorphous, color-changing thing was attacking Bock, trying to engulf him in its viscous mass.
The blob was furiously defending himself. He had bulked up his arms to try and hold the horror off, and had grown two more, shaped like scythes, that were hacking and slashing at the enemy.
"What the?!" yelped Jacques.
Henri paled. The thing was bigger and not blue, but it was otherwise exactly identical to how Bock had been at the very beginning, when he found him.
More by instinct than anything else, the chef grabbed the extinguisher and shot at the towering abomination.
The thing lashed out at the sudden attack and lost its focus on Bock.
The blue blob capitalized immediately on the opening, grew more arms, turned them all into tentacles, managed to grab and lift the thing, threw it in the cold chamber, and slammed the door.
"What was that?!" yelled Jacques.
"It was more of that nanomachines thing that makes you, right?" said Henri.
"Yeah," spat Bock as he returned his arms to their normal number and shape, and heaved at the close call and battle that happened. "That's another part of the SANS project."
"What was it doing here?!"
"It's fucking obvious, no?!" grumbled Sylvain. "The army sent it to take back their lost weapon!"
"But they saw the news, your actions with the other asshole! They know you're now sapient!" exclaimed Jacques.
"Looks like they don't care," commented bitterly Pierre.
A grim silence followed.
"We've got to go and talk to them, and fast," decided Henri.
"No," snarled Bock.
The anger that emanated from the blob cook was almost visible, so intense it was.
"I'm going alone to them. Follow me if you want, but I'll go to them alone. I've got words for them."
"Bock, calm down," pleaded Henri. "Don't do something you'd regret!"
"Don't worry, Henri, I'm just gonna talk to them. In the only language they seem to understand."
Henri worried, but didn't insist. He knew better than to try and calm a storm with words.
