I grew up reading books left by my brothers with that kind of art in it, like The Space Warriors. When I started taking art seriously, I really wanted to do that kind of art myself and went lineless for the first two years. Alas, turns out the skill barrier is a bit high on that and I've mostly given up on it until I get better. Hence all of my recent art having those terrible black lines all over it.
It's good that there's the likes of you around though, to remind me not to give up on that ideal. ^.^

Have you seen this https://imgur.com/a/N8HnE ? never fails to inspire me!
for me I think it was useful to drop the lines earlier because it forced me to learn how light changes with the planes and the natural outlines made by light from the back or sharp occlusions

AAaaah! Aaaah! Thank you so much for linking that! I love John Harris's work! He did a lot of the art I loved reading from those very same books I mentioned! And more. So that made a rough evening a lot happier!
As for those dividing zones and the variable borders... you raise a very good point and it's something I only barely brushed over myself with relatively clumsy lighting. Clearly I never quite gave the subject enough focussed research and it may well be worth pursuing doing more art like that myself in the future... Got to pull oneself away from commissions in order to draw for oneself every now and then, eh?
