The three friends waited on the shore of the small pond. It might be their favorite swimming spot in the summer, but the chill autumn breeze and the atmosphere of the full moon lent everything a surreal note.

“Thistle said to meet her here? Where is she? She never misses Nightmare night! Buttercup, have you seen her?” asked a blue unicorn.

A yellow filly replied. “No, I just got here, Blue, has Grasscutter seen her?”

A green colt shook his head. “Blue and I just got here, maybe we should go to her house?”

“Under the light of the nightmare moon!” a rich baritone voice boomed out from behind the tree where the three were standing. It was unmistakable Thistle's father, but his face and form were obscured in a long hooded cloak. A long scythe glinted in the moonlight. The three stood transfixed as he began his tale. At the end he extended the scythe over the water where a glowing white form began to materialize.
