This is Mecca, not Las Vegas.

The Abraj Al Bait Towers.
A giant hotel right across the street from the Masjid al-Haram. Sure, the reason behind it is to provide the pilgrims and worshipers a place to stay. But really, does it have to be so big and monolithic?
Muhammad seems a little overwhelmed by it all. ; )

Well, thats not so bad particularly, I mean it is a city. Should you have only a place of worship and nothing for several blocks to give it proper space? And if you did, would it be any worse having a holiday inn bordering empty space so thats the first thing you come across leaving it? I'd think it is probably a little more insulting making the hotel 1000x bigger and more elaborate then the place of worship that is supposed to house the people coming to worship there.
It's there for the super rich muslims to pray from the comfort of their hotel rooms. Not many others know that luxury.

Super rich? lol I wouldn't say that. some hotels costs around 200$ US dollars a night. it just depend on what hotel you're visiting and what kind of room you're looking for.
And beside I don't think you would go there for a holiday, it's a holy place to worship so I guess you don't need more than a night or two there.

Once finished it'll be the third tallest building in the world behind the Burj Khalifa (completed and the tallest building EVER built: height 828 meters) and the Shanghai Tower which will be completed in 2014 (proposed height: 632 meters). It'll also be the largest building ever constructed in terms of sheer mass. :)
