Based on old lore when Seamsters could be made via specially made coats. You stick something living inside and the magic fibers did all the work (including transforming in a kinda-scary way.)

Well, did you ever watch "My life as a Teenage Robot" growing up? Think of the episode where Jenny's improved exo-skin got more sentient and took any opportunity to wear her.
The baste covers would've work like that, but with more teeth, more claws, and you'd get taller, etc. Biggest difference was they wouldn't fight in being taken off later.
