It is highly suspected by many academics that the closely-guarded secrets of Baramor's ability to produce higher-grade steel are owed to the knowledge of some Antiquities that they refuse to share with the outside world.
Countless efforts have been made by other nations and non-sovereign forces to convince Baramor to either share their knowledge, or allow a tour of their workshops. But so far, they ain't budging.

Maybe the silent era was a time where most human knowledge was recorded digitally, or via some other intangible form, and when the disasters destroyed civilization the devices on which the knowledge was stored were also destroyed, leaving behind no traces of information and thus a "silent" era about which nothing is known.
That would be my theory as well. Likewise, the reason we may not be able to detect alien civilizations is that the period in which they rely on omnidirectional radio communication (instead of a wired internet or focused satellite relays) may be too brief to stand a chance of coinciding with another civilization trying to listen for it.
I was thinking the aurora lights of this world might be the tail end of the colony ship that exploded centuries ago.
The front end end would have fallen in the ocean and forced much of the colonizers tech to be left behind to sink to the bottom of the ocean.
Thus sea currents would wash up for Scavs to find. Or some artifacts might have simply fallen out of cargo pods as they fell to the planet.
Of course thinking along these lines made me think why would an artifact change a human to a scav. But it might make sense to have a way to have a way to make the local fauna more useful or change humans to a species more suitable for thriving in an alien environment.

Oh, humans are definitely aliens, here (assuming the failed colony theory is true, anyway). Yinglets are apparently native to this world, as there are "lesser yinglets" about. But what about the baxxid, the indrel, and whatever Isher is a halfbreed of? It seems unlikely, to me, that they are *all* native; that's a lot of sapient races to evolve on one world, all at the same time! So likely at least one and more likely two or even all three were on the ship along with the humans, part of some multispecies federation.
I'm just trying to decide which of them it was.
I'm just trying to decide which of them it was.
Given that giant bugs seem to be a common thing in this world I'm thinking that the Indrel are the native sentient species of the planet and that Humans and Isher's people are aliens (since they can interbreed that implies the two groups are related somehow).
The Yinglets and the Baxxids I think might both be "uplifted" local animals.
The Yinglets seem to have an implied link to the antiquities so I'm guessing they were mutated from lesser Yinglets by radioactive or mutagenic compounds from the colony ship, which is probably why their genetics are so freaky and unstable.
As for the Baxxids I'm thinking they were a native species that humans engineered into sapience. It explains why they get along with humans so well, why they're so civilized and peaceful despite being evolved from deadly ambush predators, and why they're so good a math and linguistics despite the fact that they wouldn't have much use for those things if they weren't around humans.

According to Google Translate:
The timing was good. A couple more centuries, and the peak of industrialization will begin. Moreover, at this time there is no such madness as in the distant future.
In the meantime, time travelers secretly explore the area, duplicating notes, magazines and books.
But travelers across the universes will be hard.

So my theory is that there perhaps was one or several post-human (widespread Consciousness upload, Sapient AI, heavy body modification/full body prosthesis, etc.) or at least trans-human (widespread use of cybernetics and/or genetic modification, sentient AI, etc.) civilizations before the year "0" creating these advance pieces of tech (clearly more advanced than ours since even the "mundane" pieces are still operating 1300+ years after their creation) but somehow managed to wipe themselves out. While nuclear war is plausible, I think it unlikely, I instead believe that a failed large-scale geoengineering project caused a massive environmental collapse, resulting in mass extinctions of "conventional" flora and fauna, while bio-engineered lifeforms remained and over the centuries evolved into the beings seen today, in order to fill out the nieces left by the previous flora and fauna. It would make sense for a fledgling kardashev type 1 civilization to attempt to gain full control of their climate after all. The transformation crystal can be easily explained if they were indeed a post-human civilization since such a civilization would swap bodies like one would change clothing in order to best adapt to the current environment and/or situation. Following this perspective, lifeforms like the yinglets could have been engineered as "bio-drones" performing maintenance on machinery and buildings while the baxxids original function could have been an organic tunneling, mining and/or construction device. As for why such a civilization wouldn't just use machinery for those tasks the answer is rather simple: its self maintaining, replicating, regenerating, expanding without much input on their part. Machines could absolutely achieve the same but with much more initial work involved since every part needs to be designated near flawlessly while organic "machinery" just needs a general direction and some adjustment along the way, of course machine learning could archive the same but perhaps they lacked the necessary AI or just didn't want to consolidate resources on servers and factories to run the operation. Anyway sorry for rambling on for so long, have a nice day whoever reads this.
It could be a bit more simple than bio drones for the other species, some might be xenos in orgin.
Braxid could have reverted back to a more simplistic lifestyle Or be the only natrual sapiant species on planet. With humans it takes three generations to lose information. They might lose them quicker.
yinglits could be the same or at least one of the fellow colony ships. They seem to die rather young and reproduce quickly. With memory loss at old age. So that could mean that they lose information within one or two generations
it might not be nuclear war but a plague of invasive species vying for dominance. Disease, plants, rodents all of which spirr new conflict and lines of evolution

skin mites are visible-enough under strong magnification, and precision glasswork can easily come well before bulk commodity glass because the consistency and small size needed mean it's much more doable without the advent of Float Glass. they may not be able to observe 'bacteria', but skin mites 1/1000" long can be seen easily enough, and it'd be adequate to lend authoritative credibility to the records. colloquial knowledge from people who survived the Silent Era could easily be enough to gather that understanding. people don't just Get Stupid if society collapses around them - they try and pull each other up, which means Teachin'
I am passingly familiar with, yes; what I'm getting at is that there are probably a fair amount of records-copied-from-(etc) that were originally taken down right after the Silent Era when people were scrambling to try and record as much technical knowledge as possible against just what you're describing
I had exactly the same idea.
This would also explain why neither ruins nor buildings are found of those ancestors.
Because the ancestors never lived on this world, this world is the result of a failed colonization attempt.
Those unprecedented environmental catastrophes might be the result of several crashing colony ships, after which the survivors basically had to refound society. Only, "basic" knowledge could be preserved, the more advanced bits got lost in the struggle to survive.

I'm going to invert the common assumptions about 'failed colony.' Before Year 0, the world was dominated by the mighty Ying, a wise and technologically-advanced species that held all the others under their firm, orderly, relentlessly-regimented rule. Their own success was their downfall; they made it too easy for one of their slave-species to get ahold of a genetic-redesigning kit in the year 0 and create a virus that ran rampant through the Ying, causing their offspring to be 'Ying-lets', tiny mockeries of a proper Ying, weak and foolish, with the attention span of a gnat. The humans were able to garner the most from the collapsing Ying, while the Yinglets continued to descend into pre-sentience. Only relatively recently have they been able to breed their way back to being able to so much as talk.
One of my fanfics has yinglets being descendants of a relatively small subset afflicted with a genetic condition of ADHD and progeria. However, this subset was also highly resistant to "tubethroat", an extremely virulent virus (something like sickle cell anemia with malaria), which is why they ended up predominating.

Baramor might actually have more advanced metallurgy than simple steel... Aluminum, tungsten, and/or titanium, perhaps. Though without specific knowledge of the refining and forging processes they use, it would be hard to say they weren't making 'better steel'. (At the same time they mighf actually *be* making better steel, since advanced processes make for a large difference.
It is one thing to have the knowledge to do things like that, another to be able to pull off doing that.
You need the right gear that can handle those high temps to be able to make things like this. But if it breaks and you have no idea what to do to fix that, more so since it is made from stuff that you haven't been making as pure for a while, you are in hot water.
Even more so if this happened since people lacked the knowledge because the books didn't exist, or someone didn't teach them some manner to remember how to do a task in some manner (song?).

I think you would be able to easily tell the difference between an item made from aluminium or titanium and one made from steel, just based on the density.
On the other hand, knowledge of say advanced methods of heat treatment (and perhaps a closely-guarded artefact in the form of a temperature-controlled kiln) could as you say easily make for a large difference in steel quality.

Year 0, a.k.a. colony ship landing date!
I wonder if Ran has a world map somewhere where he can plot out all the locations where Antiquities have been foundβ¦ I'm guessing that would chart a telltale web with a central pointβ¦ ground zero π
At the very least, Baramor definitely has a significant chunk of colony ship tech there they probably don't have all the instructions for, if all they do is make steel with itβ¦

Ok, sounds like this is a colony world that was cut off from the rest of humanity. Year zero may have been when settlement began, but some great event came to pass during those years that saw a fall in civilization to the degree that much knowledge was lost. If so then this means that by the time people began the process of coming back out of the dark age much knowledge was lost over time because of different reasons. Sorta like how total the Bronze Age Collapse is meant to be, or even the fall of the Indus Valley Civilaztion.
But this doesn't seem the full story. Why did so little get saved or recorded? I mean, that which we know of as the classic Greek civilization had knowledge of events that occurred in the past. Of stories about great leaders and those whom had existed from that time with a sense of how big the world was at that stage before the fall. A point shared with other groups from that time like Egypt and others. In cases like this it is so very hard to wipe out all knowledge, some gets recorded and remembered. Hell, this is sorta what happened after the fall of the Western Roman Empire in some places. The value of this knowledge became both REALLY important and EXTREMELY valued. To the stage that groups that came afterwards would invest deeply into ensuring access to some of this knowledge.
Hell, that is sorta inspired works that come deep after the fall, such as A Canticle for Leibowitz.
So...I have a funny feeling that those whom came to see this world after the dawn began to break may not have been the same people whom had been there as the fall happened. Connected, yes, but not the same. They may have been people stuck somewhere protected, and given limited knowledge of what had been. Just enough to give them the core basics, but lacking levels of context (here is some maths, no knowledge of whom made it or the like). For why...who knows.
This might be the case, or I am talking out of my fucking arse.
All I know is that I'm here for the ride. :D

My theory of why there isn't anywhere near solid records of human activity from the Silent Ages (and, I presume, no archaeological record either,) is that humans weren't on this world during that period. That they arrived on this world around year 640 by some method that they couldn't go back and couldn't communicate back, whether failed colony ship or sudden teleportation, either cross-space or cross-dimension, or some other way. And once here, their info tech stopped working, so they only had what they remembered to go by and pass on. (Since that included basic metallurgy and crop rotation, I suspect it's most likely a failed colony since a group of colonists would more likely have people who've memorized fundamental knowledge like that.)
As for why the calendar didn't start year zero at the point humanity arrived on this world: It was because they still used the dating system from before their arrival, either out of habit, hope of returning to where they came from, or expectation of more of their civilization following them. And since this is another world with very likely a different year length, dates from the Silent Ages wouldn't line up with calendars made after. Heck, later calendars likely won't even have the same months, number of months or length of months.

Aside from reinforcing my Yinglets as Aliens theory, I must note how pleasing it is that a nation reveres a solar powered disco lamp as a great and wondrous artifact.
It's almost as grand as a civilization(cave based, perhaps) using a massive lava lamp as the core light of their city-state.

Hmmm... Quite interesting that a couple of these "Antiquities" seem to be electronic devices.
If so, surely Ran has already found some of them or parts of them and attempted to reverse engineer them.
With this disco light toy, for example, there would at least be components such as wire, switches, a light source such as incandescent bulbs, LEDs or lasers, batteries, solar cells, motors, possibly some electronics, and whatever the housing is made out of.
The "Lightning stick" would potentially have even more advanced electronics. It would at least include batteries and a voltage amplifier circuit, which even in it's most primitive possible form would include resistors, capacitors, and transistors.
If this tech includes transistors, it's fairly advanced, and it would be more than likely that it also would have included pretty much any electronic technology that we would have had circa 1960-1970 at least. So, at least, radio communications and basic computers, etc.
Surely a clever lad such as Ran would have begun to figure out what some of these components do and how they work, possibly how to reproduce them, and ways to combine and use them.

something isn't right...they navigate with stars but no magnetic compass?
another theory,humans were all yinglets.
the yinglets were the perfect creature for deep space travel due less need of resources. the colony ship destruction means only a portion of human returned to their original form.

Wow, this world's history suddenly became much more interesting. Right-off-the-bat, I can try and roll with this "lost colony" theory being thrown about. I can give my take on the theory but it ain't that different from everybody else's.
So first of all, humans came to this planet for whatever reason (perhaps their old planet was destroyed, who knows?). Something went wrong, and their spaceship crashed into the ocean, rendering it unsalvageable since it's likely the humans wouldn't have the tech to go underwater and retrieve it. The only the things that could still be found would be whatever the survivors had with them when they reached land, debris from the ship that tore away during entry, and whatever wreckage that washes ashore. Since it's the humans first time in this planet, they mark it as year 0. Over the course of the next 640 years, they start again using primitive tools (as it's likely that their fancy tech had little use, ironically. Imagine a cell phone without cell service, and once it's battery's dead, you don't exactly have an outlet to charge it with) and forget their past.
For me this raises two questions. How do people just forget their past/origin and what would be the purpose of Zat Zing (assuming its origins are connected with the colony spaceship crash or 0)?
No matter what angle I look at it, I wonder how a civilization could just leave out the event that brought them to this planet when educating the younger generations or not even keep record of it. I guess 600 years is decent amount of time for generations to stop caring about it or like a tall tale, the story could change. Then, whatever "unprecedented destructive environmental catastrophes" that happened at the end of the Silent Ages could've made humanity just forget about it all together. I really don't know; I'm not MatPat.
My second qualm is the artifact. Y'know? The one that turned Kass into a yinglet? As you once said, magic doesn't exist in this world, and I don't view the artifact as magic but like a potion. You might argue that potion is magic but it isn't really magic magic where you babble nonsense then something moves or explodes or whatever. Potions are made up of physical things with their own chemical properties that can cause a reaction when mixed together. Now, I know transformation is a bit of a stretch for a simple liquid concoction to trigger but I can suspend my belief for the sake of it. That being said, what could transformation have a use for? It could be a multitude of things. Maybe the thing was still in a testing phase. Maybe it had some practical use back where the humans were from. Maybe it's for adapting to different environments somehow.

Ahaaa, I was curious to see what you would think about all this new info! : D
It's really interesting for me to read the responses of people who are really giving this whole scenario more thought than the average reader; a couple of times I found myself thinking, "Ooooh, that's actually a really good idea, given what has been revealed so far! I'm surprised I didn't think of that."
At the same time, it's unfortunately not the kind of thing I can really confirm or deny anything about without spoiling stuff : P
So just remember what your theories were, way down the line when stuff starts getting revealed- so you can see how close your guesses were on this or that, ya know?

ok so humans and only humans are in fact a non native species possibly either teleported or crash landed (somehow got stranded possibly purposefully) as either intergalactic, interdimensional, or time traveling explorers, refugees, living science experiments, british colonial criminals aka space aussies, or possibly british tea farmers looking for new planetations... something went horribly wrong eventually the computers stopped working and essentially that data was effectively lost hence the silent ages sometime during which the power went out and the internets shut down ... i am assuming it was a rather small colony hence the reason there isnt tons of trash and building material and giant floating islands of plastic ... this would also mean the actual location of the settlement might be rather hard to find or even under water .... and with a possible global tragedy like flooding or meteor or super volcano going off at year 0 well yeah could see a very tiny population of humans surviving and so not many records as it would be very tiny sustenance farms ... giving a growth rate of 20% per generation and setting new generations at 20 years we get roughly 17000 individuals at year 640 if we start with only 50 and assume they are an even split of men and women. this gives a current population if all stayed the same of just over 12 million humans ...
in short i think year 0 is when a small expedition to this world ended up loosing computer storage for some reason and with an advanced society things like paper and pens may have never been brought because who would ever need them so they merely survived on the land as farmers with rather little in the way of useful tech from whatever glitch or power loss may have happened.
some lessons like germs and basic metallurgy were passed down successfully but probably because of a high reliance on data storage they didn't have much in the way of practical knowledge since "the computers would figure it out"
in even shorter: word salad and predictions topped with wordsauce.

additionally the flora and faunado not match anything here on earth not to mention they dont really fit into any standard much less common catagories except for insects and mullusks but considering the insects that populate this world ... well...
im leaving faunado in there its better without a space.
and the fact the field guide referenced a dog which is nothing like an earth dog but we do know that things in this world can become half breeds so it's lineage could have started out as an actual dog.
another option is this place was terraformed and that could explain the rapid pace of evolution ... probably an early experimental version of terraforming which didnt quite go as expected and may still be in effect in some form or another. This would explain the ability for half breeds to actually exist because without something that can zip together 2 completely different sets of genetics then you would get 0 half breeds ... another point for terraforming IS the fact there are half breeds in the first place ... that means there is a high probability to standard genes existing rather than some other molecular makeup to create life. There is a very very very almost infinitesimally small (literally shoot a bullet in space in the direction of a neighboring galaxy and that causes it to explode small) chance that if it wasnt terraformed this planet is using similar enough gene structure to pair with ours or is using something so totally different that it is running next to ours which would mean isher is more of a conjoined twin more than 1 clear set of genes. ... however you still have yinglets which need some mechanism of wildly changing their "genetic" blueprint from one generation to the next to the point where main body structures end up growing in the wrong spots in certain cases, not just being deformed or missing but literally being in the wrong place. This throws a wrench into how everything else works because as far as we can tell all other creatures of this world do not exhibit the same extreme random chance for mutations as yinglets do.
no there could be a plot point in the artifact being the catalyst to why yinglets change wildly. say if there was some sort of microscopic nanobot that humans brought with them and say there are some packets of these that are left floating around and say a lesser yinglet chewed on one and it popped. These nanobots depending on how they are programmed could potentially create a much enhanced creature ... infact they could even set up tiny crisper factories to modify genetic code or if the nanobots ai is advanced enough it could map out what molecular structures are used on this planet for life and once mapped could manipulate them that way ... this would put yinglets on a completely different evolutionary path and essentially make them cyborgs more or less. This can also explain the extreme changes from one generation to the next since the ai could be experimenting slowly trying to make a better and better creature using sliced up "genetic" (i am going to use that word even though this planet may be using something that isnt infact a gene chain because we dont have a different word for different possible biological blueprinting systems) code in their reproductive systems.
yet another theory postulating on the EOTTCHTWAWUFTRMTDUA aka celestial explosion aka heavenly veil ... its interesting that one group calls it an explosion as it could be a collapsed worm hole or some other transport gate which would explain how humans got here ... but all in all it is clear humans are not of this world and im slightly certain humans are the cause, albeit indirectly, of the greater yinglet and its absolute russian roulette of a gamble for viability in new life. I am reasonably certain that if humans had not shown up than 1 of 3 species that we currently know of would end up becoming the most dominant and forming some form of modern society atleast if they didnt kill themselves trying. baxxid would most likley be part of this society but more as a secondary scholarly, scientific, analysis role. They themselves would not be able to build into the industrial age by themselves simply due to dexterity limitations leaving 2 other species the inndrel and whatever isher is, let's call them giant freckled unicorn raptors. so im assuming her non human parent is intelligent but it could be a case of drunkent farmer or not drunken farmer and she's just lucky shes not half tiplod. so assuming GFURs are intelligent they might have dexterity and be able to manipulate things, they probably have more internal competition in their societies than indrel would and so they may infact have been the reigning species to scorn the planet with overpopulation and massive quantities of plastic trash. That then leaves us with indrel. They dont have as much internal strife and competition so less drive per hive to innovate and get an edge over the next individual but we have to look at the hive as a whole as the individual and there is competition between hives so since collectively they have a ton of thought power per hive and are able to be very dexterous all things considered they may very well have become the race to make the most plastic trash to clog the oceans. Either way i think the baxxid would glom onto and fit themselves into either society at some point partly used by the society because of their specialties in early development and partly because they are living calculators. however once established they may very well take over the society as rulers of some sort or another ending up being very politically powerful partly due to being the ones running large corporations and handling lots of money flow. however i doubt they would want to be in the spotlight too much for some reason so if they were running a government it would be through a puppet of the reigning species. possibly a way to keep the populace in check and not revolt against the scary by unhandy ones. i can see a political party forming called the handy's who tout about getting out from under the arm claw or some such.
or this world could just be jacked ...

im leaving faunado in there its better without a space.
and the fact the field guide referenced a dog which is nothing like an earth dog but we do know that things in this world can become half breeds so it's lineage could have started out as an actual dog.

There are an absolute minimum of five species on this planet: Humans, Yinglets, Baxxid and "Others". The others would have to at least be Indrel and Isher's father.
But 2% of the population of the city is not Indrel, unless there are only about 44 humans in the city! And Isher is keeping her ancestry secret, so Papa's species is also unlikely to be one of them.
Of course, 'others' could total half a dozen. Or more.

also could we get a map of points of interest where things are found because im sure ran has one somewhere ... so far we know baramor has something and easwall found the taser nightsticks so it seems that area on https://www.furaffinity.net/view/20599688/ map is kindof a hotspot for items.
also another aside to my original prediction is whatever the original humans were doing it was not just a purely scientific endeavor as there wouldn't be subdue and detain style weapons such as electrified police batons. even if it was a massive scientific expedition with say 100-200 individuals there may only be 2-3 guard personnel and they would be for keeping the others safe from locals if it was know there were dangerous creatures on this planet ... in short nobody would take an electric baton to a different planet to subdue local species as the effectiveness would be unknown.
this indicates there originally was some sort of civilian population and there was some form of policing with this population or again possibly the brits were at it this time creating space aussies banishing people to essentially a penal colony.
Also the penal colony would explain why there is little in the way of remnants of an ancient society and little in the way of artifacts. people would be dropped off and simply left to their own devices with few if any items. Some of these people would have basic knowledge and basic schooling and a few would have had advanced schooling but again even in todays society everything is digital and we rely on this to disseminate knowledge and if these people were separated from that the fact that brains are lazy means memory is lazy too why keep data when a google search will give it to you and so the lessons that were able to be passed down are incomplete but some of the starting basics are there from a medical side of thing and some scientific sides of things too.
this sounds like the most realistic scenario rather than some sort of disaster happened and wiped tech from the planet or even "the power went out" and data stores were no longer able to be accessed.
this leaves baramor with a few reasonable options ... maybe it does have a crude foundry built by some of the original inhabitants who tried to get something going or more likely it simply has some retained knowledge of metallurgy that is now highly guarded say the formula for titanium or maybe they have a uranium deposit in their borders or are making tungsten or aluminum. heck with the basics of metallurgy they could have simply been experimenting with different amounts of additives and came up with something themselves. now if they were pumping out plastic which isnt metal at all but others thought of it as a metal then that is very different.

the bigger question though isnt where is the foundations but rather where are the stories? so if we take year 0 heck lets take ~100 years before year 0 so that gives us ~ 750 years worth of generations and if we go by an medieval society lifespan of your dead by 50 except for the first few generations and also take into account the fact that this society already has a massive leap forward in medical giving us an approximated lifespan of 75 this gives us a story that had to be passed down 10 times to reach a point where recorded records start becoming reliable. at that point the stories will not change much over the next ~700 years till current day.
There would be lots of stories about earth or possibly some journey through the stars or perhaps fantastical whizbang gadgets that made society great. wheres the story of the legendary oracle google who had all the answers to everything, or how carts could fly and needed nothing to pull them, or the legend of the internet that magically teleported everyone together into the same city, or of microscopic bugs that could heal anything and even gave immortality.
they must exist and they must still have some reasonable clarity to them considering they were passed retold between 10-20 times before someone probably wrote it down.

ok some more predictions and theories...
humans, and mammals in general, are definitely not native to this world.
if we go with year 0 as kindof a start point of some disaster that happened to some intergalactic or interdimensional travelers or a group of poor wabbajacked sods there would have to be enough of them where they kept with their own social groups namely skin colors ... however i haven't seen any asian people so my guess is these original people all came from us considering they are using americanized english vs any other dialect however it could also simply be because val is learned in american english and that's why too. But the differences in skin tones for the humans means the starting group must have been larger than just a couple individuals else skin color would be much more uniform.
interesting observation is even though it was originally english it may, and probably does, now sound completely different even though most people in this world have some form of education ... this would slow the change in dialect but that change would still be quite apparent if they somehow were teleported back in time or someone was teleported forward in time to them or someone from earth suddenly showed up to see what was going on.it would be similar to one of us going back to the 1600s in britain ... we would have a massively hard time talking to people back then even though its still "english"
another language observation is the baxxids fully adopted english and even though they talk to each other in a sort of low frequency buzz those buzz's are basically a 1 to 1 translation of english. they must have had some language before but they have so completely adopted human society that that language is probably mostly lost to time.
yinglets adopted the language because they had nothing better
indrel still primarily use their own language and few know much english
also could we get a google maps style resolution map ... i cant zoom into individual caravan carts on https://www.furaffinity.net/view/20599688/ that one and there is no street view options either ... but i would like to see one with more of the main routes and cities and towns and whatnot. I am also guessing there is more to the world and this is basically one continent... interactive street view would definitely be a bonus though
also the "clams and oysters" here are probably different then ones on earth but since they are similar because a bivalve is kindof going to be like all other bivalves they were simply called that by humans from the beginning.
anotehr interesting point, which also helps prove humans are an invasive species, is the fact that there is a distinct lack of monkeys so far. in fact the primary apex species' are all some form of insect or worm. so it seems that mammals never really got a chance on this planet and either insects and worms were dominant since they first evolved or some catastrophe or catastrophes lead insects and worms to become apex species.

So I've finally been reading through OoP-ers after meaning to for years. Obviously I'm commenting on a four year-old post, so I may not get a reply and I'm definitely behind on some lore, but something I've been wondering - is the language they're speaking in-universe the same as we see it in the strip, i.e., their language is just English-but-they-call-it-something-else? Or is this effectively just an English "translation" of whatever they're speaking in-universe for convenience's sake?
