"It’s not such a lonely world if you have a dog. It’s also up to us to give them a home, and the love they so deserve.
God knows they give back more love than I know what to do with."
Truth. You and I are very much alike in regards to our canine family members. They are so hard to let go of at the end, but the love and joy they give us during our too-short times together is worth it. I'm typing this with a lump in my throat, V. Thanks for the story.

Thank you for this, and for taking in the needy.
All of my dogs have been rescues. In Hawaii my wife (now ex) and I would adopt dogs from the humane society and train them to do work. Herding horses and cattle, tracking, hunting. And we found good homes for them.
As I got older I looked for older dogs and dogs with issues just so they could have a comfortable life in their twilight years. My current old girl, Lila, has joint and dental issues and special dietary needs. She's a happy, silly girl and she'll be safe with me till the end.

I moved out when I was older, 20 years old. I was a late bloomer, but when I finally was on my own, I got a cat. I think I've had a cat wherever I was, up until I lost Skittles (she was super ancient, I called her my Grandma Baby). That must've been over 3 years ago... I've been on the fence about adopting (I'd rescue an older cat at a shelter), but after reading this, I think I might finally do that.
Of all the dogs we owned growing up, Pepper was my dog and the only rescue. She was a black and white border collie and I truly loved her. She went from being a scared skittering wreck to the most glorious stare-into-your-soul creature and could run like the wind. We roved through the countryside together for about ten years. I lost her to a seizure when my parents decided to put her down. She still visits my dreams sometimes. I haven’t been in a living situation since that allows pets, and I know no other friend will replace her, but someday I will have another dog.
This was so lovely to read. I'm already convinced that if I get a dog in future, it will be a rescue, one to whom I can provide all the love and attention they need, and this just convinced me further that would be the right choice. Thank you so much for sharing this. *hugs* ^^
