Okay, less smart-assy reply: She has been making goo-goo eyes at him for days. Weeks, even. She thinks he's interested in her--he did propose to her on top of the mountain, even gave her the button off his tunic from over his heart.
But he's been behaving like a drill sergeant to her, and it's pissing her off. He's doing it for a very good reason--he need to train her in how not to get killed. He's also mad at her for getting herself into this fix, and is despairing because he knows Jinjur will kill her, and he has fallen in love with Kathy and doesn't want to lose her. So they're both struggling with some pretty intense and fluctuating emotions.

True. Okay, not bi-polar, just a typical person interested in a relationship with someone else. (It's been so long for me that I forgot about acting like that.)
You're right about the drill sergeant aspect. But, I see Fred's point(s). Kathy does seem to be a bit hot-headed at times and she does let people push her buttons. Maybe Fred's trying to teach her to not let people do that to her. I can foresee Jinjur trying that with her in the duel. If Kathy can not only ignore Jinjur's jibes but throw a few back, it may work to Kathy's advantage.
