An earlier post clarified that the species are true hermaphrodites, capable of being sire or dame. The gender they're referred to as is a matter of choice/preference.

Pretty much what armistice said. Hillanders can conceive and fertilize equally, they can choose freely to take the role of female or male. Their body only produces an egg ready for fertilization 2-3 times per year, so it's easy to plan ahead of time who takes which role.
