Lost and Found
Chapter Sixteen
One week later...
Despite the peace that had settled over the small town of File City, there was still an air of unease with it's residents, in particular, Mewtwo and Renamon. It wasn't the battle against the Banchos that had them on edge, but the lack of information regarding LadyDevimon and her involvement during the fight. Both were still livid at the attempt on their daughter's life, but had acquiesced to EmperorGreymon's request to not approach Myotismon. Still, after a week of hearing nothing, they were starting to lose patience.
“I still think we should go and confront Myotismon,” Mewtwo said.
“As do I,” Renamon replied. “Unfortunately, EmperorGreymon has made it clear we're not to go anywhere near Myotismon or his castle.”
“I realize that,” Mewtwo said. “But it's been over a week and we've heard nothing back from him. How long does it take to interrogate someone?”
“That's assuming LadyDevimon is even cooperating with the questioning,” Renamon pointed out. “Short of torturing her, I doubt LadyDevimon is going to be straightforward with her answers.”
“Give me a few moments with LadyDevimon and I'll get the truth out of her,” Mewtwo growled ominously, his eyes flashing blue.
“Now, now, Mewtwo, that's not a good example to set for your daughter,” Jijimon said, entering the room. “Anyway, just what would you do if you did have LadyDevimon standing before you? Force her to tell you the truth with your psychic powers? Exhert your will over hers? I doubt you want to resort to such tactics, no matter how upset you are. You're above such things, Mewtwo.”
Mewtwo halted, looking slightly ashamed. Jijimon was right. He was letting his anger get the better of him. And it scared him, as it reminded him too much of how he used to be. And all the terrible things he had done.
“You're right, Jijimon,” Mewtwo said. “I've never really thought of anyone elses well being before. Having a family changes things. But that's no excuse for my behavior.” He glanced over at Merenamon who was gazing up at her father, no doubt sensing his unease and restlessness. “And you're correct about setting a good example for Merenamon.”
“I think that applies to both of us,” Renamon spoke up. “Still, this is frustrating. Even if we can't do anything to Myotismon, LadyDevimon at least needs to be held accountable.”
“Unfortunately, it's not that easy, Renamon,” Jijimon said. “We only have Charon's word that LadyDevimon was here in the first place. And I doubt the entire Council will believe him. What's more, the only other person who saw the entire incident was Merenamon. And she certainly can't tell us anything.”
“Unless....”, Mewtwo said.
“Unless what,” Renamon asked.
“I might be able to read Merenamon's thoughts and see what she saw,” Mewtwo said.
“You could do that,” Renamon asked.
“It's possible,” Mewtwo said. “However, she's very young and her powers are underdeveloped. There's a chance her thoughts might not be entirely clear to me.”
“Still, a small chance is better than nothing,” Jijimon said. “And we just might get some answers.”
“I agree,” Renamon said. “I say we give it a try.”
“Very well,” Mewtwo said. He knelt down and picked up Merenamon, who stared back at him curiously. “Don't worry, Merenamon. This won't hurt a bit. Just relax and open your mind to me.”
Concentrating his psychic powers, Mewtwo's eyes began glowing blue as he locked his gaze with his daughter's, whose eyes were also glowing. Their minds connected and Mewtwo followed her thoughts back to one week ago....
Mewtwo found himself staring up at Charon, who held him in his arms. No. Not him. Merenamon! He was seeing things through his daughter's eyes. At the moment, Charon was gazing out the window, but at what? Then it dawned on him. The battle with the Bancho Digimon. No doubt he was watching the battle unfold outside. Suddenly, a dark sensation settled over Mewtwo/Merenamon. Turning, he/she saw the source: LadyDevimon! Unbidden, he/she heard himself/herself growl. Charon turned to see LadyDevimon standing before him.
“L-LadyDevimon,” Charon gasped, backing up against the wall. “Why are you here? I, uh, don't suppose you're here to help against the Bancho Digimon, are you?”
“Sorry to get your hopes up, human,” LadyDevimon replied. “But I'm not here for them. Or you, for that matter. I'm here for her.” She pointed at Mewtwo/Merenamon.
“Merenamon? What do you want with her,” Charon asked.
“I'm here to delete her, of course,” LadyDevimon said.
“Delete her,” Charon exclaimed. “Why? She's just an infant!”
“An infant that could pose a threat to our world,” LadyDevimon said. “With her unique lineage and power, she could grow to be a potential danger to our very existence. Therefore, she must be deleted, for the good of the Digital World.”
“I don't buy that for a second,” Charon snapped. “You don't care about anyone's safety or well-being. This is just an excuse to get even with Mewtwo after he humiliated you.”
“I won't deny I'll get some satisfaction in this,” LadyDevimon said. “But that aside, I was ordered to delete her and I intend to do just that. Now, make this easier on yourself, old man. Hand over the child and I'll spare your life...for the time being, that is.”
“You really think I'd do such a thing,” Charon said. “Mewtwo and Renamon entrusted the safety of their child to me, and I have no intention of betraying them. Now, I suggest you leave here.”
“So it's going to be like that, is it,” LadyDevimon said. “Very well. I had no orders to destroy you, but it seems I'll have get rid of both of you after all.” She flexed her clawed hand and advanced on them.
Following this statement, LadyDevimon attacked. Charon tried to retreat with Mewtwo/Merenamon, only to be intercepted by the evil Digimon. The next thing Mewtwo/Merenamon knew, he/she and Charon both were sent hurtling across the room only to crash into the wall. Charon was knocked unconscious, but Mewtwo/Merenamon was still awake. Then he/she saw LadyDevimon approach. Mewtwo/Merenamon hissed and slashed at her.
“Hmph, cute,” LadyDevimon sneered.
As she reached down to grab Mewtwo/Merenamon, he/she used his/her psychic powers to halt LadyDevimon.
“So, you're using your psychic abilities, huh, you little brat,” LadyDevimon snarled. “Nice try.” She managed to break past the psychic force holding her in place and grabbed Mewtwo/Merenamon. “But as strong as it is, it's nowhere near as strong as your father's.”
Struggling in LadyDevimon's grip, Mewtwo/Merenamon attempted to use his/her psychic abilities again but it wasn't strong enough to stop LadyDevimon.
“If you're this strong as an infant with so little experience, I can't even begin to imagine how strong you'll be years from now,” LadyDevimon said. “Fortunately you won't live long enough to reach that potential.” She brought her taloned fingers up to the struggling infant Pokemon/Digimon. “Farewell, child.”
Suddenly, LadyDevimon stiffened and Mewtwo/Merenamon saw a sword protruding from her midriff. What's more, he/she saw someone standing behind LadyDevimon. Then he/she fell to the floor as LadyDevimon let her go. She staggered and turned to confront her attacker.
“Y-You,” she gasped. “What do you...think you're doing?”
“Dealing with a traitor to the Council.”
Then the mystery figure struck her down, reducing her to digital particles. Then the figure turned to regard Mewtwo/ Merenamon before disappearing from sight....
Mewtwo broke the connection with Merenamon, knowing that he had learned all he would from his daughter. Merenamon shook her head, obviously a bit disoriented from the psychic link. She then murred at Mewtwo, smiling.
“Well,” Renamon asked anxiously. “What did you see?”
“LadyDevimon was here alright,” Mewtwo said. “And she did attempt to destroy Merenamon, just as Charon told us.”
“And did you see what happened to her,” Jijimon asked.
“I did,” Mewtwo said, his tone somber. “Someone killed her.”
The room fell silent at Mewtwo's reply.
“You're serious,” Renamon said. “Someone actually destroyed LadyDevimon?”
“Well, don't leave us in suspense, Mewtwo,” Jijimon said. “Did you see who it was?”
“Not exactly,” Mewtwo said. “For some reason I couldn't quite see clearly who the attacker was. As I said, there is a possibility I wouldn't be able to see things clearly through Merenamon's thoughts. Whoever it was, LadyDevimon seemed to recognize them. And they had sword.”
“Did the mystery figure say anything,” Jijimon asked.
“They said something about dealing with a traitor to the Council,” Mewtwo replied. “No doubt implying LadyDevimon disobeying the Council's ruling to spare Merenamon's life. Hmm. Now that I think about it, the mystery figure's voice actually sounded familiar. I feel like I've heard it somewhere before.”
“Hmm, interesting,” Jijimon mused. “Obviously this person must work for the Council, given that sort of statement. As for the sword, that won't help us much. There are several Digimon on and off the Council, who use a sword. At any rate, now we know what became of LadyDevimon at least.”
“Which means anyone searching for her is just searching in vain,” Renamon said.
“So what now,” Mewtwo asked.
“I'd say the answer is pretty obvious,” Jijimon said. “We'll need to tell EmperorGreymon about this. And Myotismon will need to be informed about the loss of his emissary.”
“Not to mention the fact that said emissary was here in the first place,” Mewtwo pointed out. “And that she did try to destroy our daughter as well.”
“Yes. It seems Myotismon's problems are far from over,” Jijimon said.
Myotismon's castle...
“This is infuriating,” Myotismon raged, pacing restlessly across the room. “It's been over a week and there's still no word from LadyDevimon! Nor has anyone seen or heard from her either! Where could she be?”
“It is rather puzzling,” Daemon said. “I've even had my own scouts out searching for her and they have yet to find any clues to her whereabouts as well. Could it be she's in hiding?”
“I had thought that at first,” Myotismon said. “But even if that were the case, she would have found some way to get a message to me. No. I feel something may have happened to her.”
“Could she have run afoul of the Banchos upon their retreat,” Daemon speculated.
“I highly doubt it,” Myotismon replied. “I can guarantee those egotistical delinquents would be bragging about taking out an emissary of the Council.”
“Hm. True,” Daemon conceded. “And no doubt they were more interested in escaping from File City rather than dealing with LadyDevimon. Has there been any word from the Council in regards to this?”
“None,” Myotismon said. “Well, apart from EmperorGreymon pestering me about LadyDevimon and wanting to speak to her. Sooner or later I'm going to have to tell him something. But what?”
At that moment, the door opened and Phantomon entered, and he looked worried.
“Sire,” he said. “It's EmperorGreymon! He's here! And he brought that Pokemon with him!”
“What? EmperorGreymon and Mewtwo both are here,” Myotismon exclaimed. “Did they say why?”
“They said they have information regarding LadyDevimon,” Phantomon said.
Myotismon glanced at Daemon. Despite the fact he wore a hood, Myotismon had a feeling Daemon's expression matched his own.
“Very well,” Myotismon said. “Show them in.”
Nodding, Phantomon turned and exited the room.
“Shall I depart then,” Daemon asked.
“No need,” Myotismon said. “If they ask, you can just tell them you were assisting me in searching for LadyDevimon.”
A moment later, the door opened again, and in stepped EmperorGreymon, followed by Mewtwo. They both halted before Myotismon and Daemon, each eyeing one another warily. Finally, EmperorGreymon broke the silence.
“Daemon? I wasn't expecting to see you here,” he said.
“I was merely stopping by,” Daemon said. “I've been assisting Myotismon in searching for LadyDevimon.” His gaze shifted to Mewtwo. “So, this is the famous Mewtwo I've been hearing about. A pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
Mewtwo remained silent, his eyes narrowing.
“Speaking of LadyDevimon,” EmperorGreymon said. “We have news about her that you might find interesting.”
“Ah, yes,” Myotismon said. “Phantomon told me as such. Tell me, what have you learned about LadyDevimon? I trust she's alright?”
“She's dead,” Mewtwo spoke up.
“I...I beg your pardon,” Myotismon said.
“I said, she's dead,” Mewtwo replied, his tone hardening. “And what's more, she did try to kill my daughter.”
“I already spoke with EmperorGreymon about this,” Myotismon said. “And frankly, I don't appreciate you coming here and making such accusations.”
“I have every right to do so,” Mewtwo snapped. “You might not want to believe Charon, but he wasn't the only one present when your emissary showed up. I read my daughter's thoughts and saw what she saw. Not only was LadyDevimon there, but she did indeed try to kill Merenamon. I saw and heard it all.”
“And why should we believe that,” Daemon asked.
“I think you missed the fact that I'm psychic,” Mewtwo said. “I am capable of reading thoughts. Including yours, Daemon. Funny. You're concentrating really hard to keep your mind blank at the moment. One would think you had something to hide.”
“Perhaps I just don't want my private thoughts violated,” Daemon replied harshly.
“If I may interject here,” Myotismon spoke up. “You said LadyDevimon perished. How, exactly?”
“I saw someone else in Merenamon's thoughts,” Mewtwo said. “Someone with a sword. Whoever they were, they ambushed LadyDevimon and finished her off.”
“Someone attacked my emissary and destroyed her,” Myotismon snapped. “I want to know who!”
“As I mentioned, I'm not certain who it was,” Mewtwo replied. “But at the moment, you should be less concerned about LadyDevimon and more worried about yourself.”
“And just what is that supposed to mean,” Myotismon asked.
“There is the matter of LadyDevimon showing up at File City and trying to kill Merenamon,” EmperorGreymon said. “On your orders, I might add. With both Mewtwo's discovery and Charon's testimony, it's not looking good for you, Myotismon. Now, how about you stop acting outraged and tell us the truth.”
For a moment, no one moved or said a word, the air thick with tension.
“Fine! You want the truth,” Myotismon ground out. “Yes. I did order her to attack the child. You fools fail to realize how much danger she poses to our world.” He pointed savagely at Mewtwo. “Her and her father both! And since you were too spineless to do anything about it, it fell to me to do something. Just like with Emperor Leomon!”
“There's a big difference between killing an innocent child and a ruthless Digimon Warlord,” EmperorGreymon said. “The Council was willing to overlook your part in Emperor Leomon's demise, but this cannot be overlooked. I have no choice but to take you before the Council to stand trial for your actions.”
“And just what makes you think I'll comply with your request,” Myotismon sneered.
“It's not a request,” EmperorGreymon snapped. “You have committed a serious violation against the Council's ruling!”
“The Council's ruling is weak,” Myotismon said. “You fail to see the bigger picture! The child is a threat to our very existence!”
“Enough,” EmperorGreymon snarled. “Either you surrender and come peacefully or I will take you to the Council Hall by force.”
“Don't think I'm afraid of you, EmperorGreymon,” Myotismon said. “Don't forget what I'm capable of.”
“Then perhaps you should be afraid of me,” Mewtwo said, stepping forward.
“Mewtwo, please, let me handle this,” EmperorGreymon said. “This is a Council matter.”
“And it's a family matter for me,” Mewtwo said. “He threatened my daughter and I intend to see him pay for it.”
“I have no intention of letting either of you do anything,” Myotismon said. “GRIZZLY WING!”
Spreading his arms wide, Myotismon unleashed a wave of dark bats which surged towards both Mewtwo and EmperorGreymon. The saurian Digimon swiped his massive battle sword, dispersing several of the bats, while Mewtwo used his psychic powers to shield himself. Taking advantage of the momentary distraction, Myotismon turned and flew out the window.
“Myotismon,” Mewtwo yelled, charging through the air, following after the vampire Digimon.
EmperorGreymon finished off the last of the bats, then turned and rushed out the door to follow Mewtwo and Myotismon.
Outside, Myotismon turned to glance back, only to gasp in surprise as he saw Mewtwo streaking towards him at amazing speed. Before he could react, Mewtwo collided with him, knocking him to the ground. Myotismon crashed to the ground, managing to recover quickly enough as Mewtwo glided down, landing just a few feet away from him.
“You fool,” Myotismon spat. “You would dare attack me?”
“Shut up,” Mewtwo yelled, his eyes flaring blue. “You have no right to act indignant about being attacked, not after what you tried to do!”
“You should have stayed in your own world, Mewtwo,” Myotismon said. “You have no place here. You or that human, and especially that half-breed child of yours!”
Mewtwo's anger finally snapped and he unleashed a massive wave of psychic energy, directing it towards Myotismon. The vampire Digimon leaped into the air, just narrowly avoiding the attack.
“Allow me to show you what happens to those who challenge me,” Myotismon said. “CRIMSON LIGHTNING!”
Two red energy whips materialized in Myotismon's hands. He then struck, swiping at Mewtwo with his energy whips. Mewtwo moved fast, avoiding the energy whips as they struck where he had previously stood, tearing up the ground. Mewtwo flew towards Myotismon, weaving around the whips as his opponent struck at him. Closing the distance, Mewtwo struck, landing a solid hit on Myotismon, knocking him back. As Mewtwo moved in again to attack, Myotismon reacted quickly, intercepting Mewtwo's next hit. He struck out, catching Mewtwo in the face. Recovering from the blow, Mewtwo grabbed onto Myotismon and the two grappled with one another. Mewtwo then broke the hold with a burst of psychic power. He then conjured up several energy orbs and flung them at Myotismon. Creating two more red energy whips, Myotismon swung them around, knocking Mewtwo's orbs away from him. He then struck at Mewtwo, lashing away at him. Mewtwo brought his arms up, flinching as the whips snapped at him.
Concentrating, he channeled his psychic energy and sent out a massive shock-wave, knocking Myotismon off balance. Taking advantage of the moment, Mewtwo powered up and used Aura Sphere. The energy projectile struck Myotismon, sending him sailing through the air and crashing into a nearby tree, winding him.
“Now, are you ready to surrender, Myotismon,” Mewtwo asked. “Or do we need to continue this fight? Either way works for me.”
“You really think I'm defeated that easily,” Myotismon said, climbing to his feet. To Mewtwo's surprise, he was actually smiling. “I won't deny you are quite strong, my friend. It would be foolish to underestimate you. Just as it's foolish to underestimate me.”
Suddenly, he began glowing. The outline of Myotismon then began expanding in size and girth, growing to immense proportions. Then the transformation was complete. Mewtwo stared up in surprise! Myotismon had Digivolved! He was gigantic, even bigger than Emperor Leomon when he had transformed into his Beast Form.
“BEHOLD! MY MEGA FORM: VENOMMYOTISMON,” he proclaimed, his voice shaking the very area.
“I think I may have bitten off a bit more than I can chew,” Mewtwo said.
EmperorGreymon hurried through the forest in the direction he had seen Mewtwo and Myotismon flying off in. He was concerned Mewtwo would engage Myotismon in battle and that was something he couldn't let happen. Myotismon was a powerful and dangerous Digimon, and unlike BanchoGolemon, he was more cunning and tactical. But what worried him most was the fact that Myotismon could still Digivolve. And as strong as Mewtwo was, on his own, he would be no match for the vampiric Digimon.
“EmperorGreymon!”
EmperorGreymon looked over to see Mervamon heading towards him.
“I saw Mewtwo and Myotismon go flying past,” Mervamon said. “Please tell me it's not as bad as I think it is.”
“I'm afraid it is,” EmperorGreymon replied. “Myotismon not only confessed, but he chose to resist being taken in. Mewtwo went after him when he tried to bolt. And now I fear they may be locked in battle with each other.”
“Great,” Mervamon growled. “I can't believe Mewtwo would be so reckless.” She sighed. “What am I saying? Of course he would be that reckless.”
“Lets just hope we're not too late,” EmperorGreymon said. “We may be able to salvage this situa...” He fell silent as a gigantic form appeared, towering over the trees.
“Oh, please, tell me that's not what I think it is,” Mervamon gasped, also catching sight of the gigantic Digimon.
“It is,” EmperorGreymon said. “Hurry, Mervamon! We haven't a moment to lose!”
Mervamon nodded, putting on an extra burst of speed. But she wondered, would they, along with Mewtwo, be enough to subdue VenomMyotismon?
Mewtwo dodged aside as a massive clawed hand swooped down at him. The claws scratched huge troughs in the ground before sweeping around to attempt another grab at Mewtwo. The psychic Pokemon flew up into the air, trying to put as much distance between himself and VenomMyotismon, but that proved easier said than done considering the length of his enemy's arms.
“YOU CANNOT ESCAPE ME,” VenomMyotismon taunted, swiping at Mewtwo. “SOONER OR LATER I WILL CATCH YOU!”
“Maybe. But I won't make it easy for you,” Mewtwo replied. “Especially when I do this.”
In a flash, Mewtwo shifted into his Y Mega Form and then dashed towards VenomMyotismon. With a huge increase in his speed, Mewtwo was able to fly circles around the gigantic Digimon. VenomMyotismon struck, trying to knock Mewtwo out of the sky, but he proved to be too fast to target.
“HOLD STILL, YOU PEST,” VenomMyotismon raged, attempting to grab Mewtwo out of the air, only to miss him.
“I think not,” Mewtwo replied, dodging just out of VenomMyotismon's reach. Conjuring up several psychic orbs, he hurled them at VenomMyotismon, striking him directly in the face, causing him to stagger backwards.
VenomMyotismon let out a furious bellow and then opened his mouth further, expelling a blast of poisonous cloud at Mewtwo. Mewtwo reacted quickly, putting up a protective barrier around himself. However, while the poison mist didn't harm him, that left him a sitting target. VenomMyotismon struck out, knocking Mewtwo to the ground. Fortunately the barrier had absorbed most of the damage and protected him, but the impact had temporarily stunned him. He looked up as VenomMyotismon approached, towering over him.
“NOW I HAVE YOU,” VenomMyotismon laughed. He lifted a massive foot, positioning it over Mewtwo. “AND NOW I'LL SQUASH YOU LIKE A BUG! FAREWELL, MEWTWO!”
Before he could follow through with his threat, EmperorGreymon and Mervamon arrived on the scene.
“VenomMyotismon,” EmperorGreymon called out. “Cease this at once! You're only making things worse for yourself!”
VenomMyotismon turned away from Mewtwo and glanced down at EmperorGreymon. With him distracted, Mervamon ran over to check on Mewtwo, who had returned to his original form.
“You alright,” she asked, helping him sit up.
“I'll be fine,” Mewtwo said, rubbing his head. “My barrier took the brunt of his attack. By the way, where did you come from, Mervamon? I didn't see you at the castle.”
“I was actually standing by outside the castle,” Mervamon explained. “EmperorGreymon thought it might be wise to have me nearby just in case things went south, which apparently it did. What were you thinking going after Myotismon alone like that?”
“I didn't think he would Digivolve,” Mewtwo said. “Nor did I expect it to be that massive.”
“I warned you he had a Mega Form,” Mervamon admonished. “Though I suppose I should have mentioned it was gigantic.”
“So now what,” Mewtwo asked. “Do we stand a chance against him like that?”
“Honestly, I don't know,” Mervamon answered. “I've never fought against him like that before. And I don't even know the full scope of his power and strength.”
They turned to see EmperorGreymon facing VenomMyotismon, attempting to reason with him.
“It doesn't have to be this way, VenomMyotismon,” EmperorGreymon said. “Just stand down.”
“AND HAVE YOU PARADE ME IN FRONT OF THE REST OF THE COUNCIL FOR A TRIAL,” VenomMyotismon spat. “PERHAPS LOCK ME UP AND THROW AWAY THE KEY? I THINK NOT! I DID WHAT WAS NECESSARY FOR THE GOOD OF THE DIGITAL WORLD!”
“Just like when you stranded EmperorLeomon in my world,” Mewtwo exclaimed. “Your solution endangered the humans and Pokemon!”
“YOU THINK I CARE ABOUT THAT,” VenomMyotismon sneered. “YOUR WORLD PROVED TO BE A HANDY PLACE TO EXILE EMPEROR LEOMON! WHATEVER HAPPENED TO YOUR WORLD AND IT'S INHABITANTS MEAN LITTLE TO ME!”
“Man, I knew he was a creep, but this is worse than I ever imagined,” Mervamon said.
“I'm giving you one final chance, VenomMyotismon ,” EmperorGreymon said. “Surrender to the Council and stand trial for your crimes, otherwise we will have no choice but to use force.”
“I THINK YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT MY ANSWER WILL BE, EMPERORGREYMON,” VenomMyotismon replied. “WHY BOTHER ASKING?”
EmperorGreymon sighed, drawing his battle blade. “Then you leave us no choice. Mervamon, Mewtwo?”
“You don't have to ask me twice,” Mervamon said, drawing her own blade. She pointed it at VenomMyotismon. “VenomMyotismon, by order of the Sovereign Council, you're under arrest and will be made to stand trial for your crimes, by force if necessary.”
“YOU'RE WELCOME TO TRY,” VenomMyotismon rumbled, flexing his massive claws.
Without another word, the two Digimon and Mewtwo charged towards VenomMyotismon as he moved in to attack.
