This is a little strike-a-light I've made to replace my old one that has served me very well for the longest of times, but it felt too small now. This one is a nicer size.
It is made from a piece of an old file.
The steel has very little temper, it is at maximum hardness, but the little scrolls are softened.
It has to be maximum hardness to make good sparks.
The way these work is the flint shears off small flakes of the steel and they come off so fast they sparkle, sort of like how a bench grinder shears off steel gratings when you grind it.
