Makes me think of a line from one of my favorite Asterix comics -

"It's unheard of! The slaves have been working better since we started paying them!"

"Yes, it means more initial outplay, but bigger profits!"

"And think of the savings on whips!"

"The whippings will continue until morale improves"

In the comic the slaves use their new super-strength to negotiate better conditions - "We want a ban on chains, but we'll settle for a gradual phasing out of whips."
