I mean, it was not sweeping the grass or anything but it was usually down to the base of the neck if they did it.

Interesting, I never knew that! But that implies there was a reason that the rank-and-file couldn't have hair that long. I figure a warrior would want as little hair as possible, same with loose clothing, to prevent the enemy from having spots to grab you. Maybe I'm RPGing it too much.
that's surely part of it; another part is that short head-hair doesn't attract fleas as easily. with modern armies one criteria is that the hair should fit underneath the helmet; it just looks odd if it sticks out everywhere. also, long hair can get in the way of things like using a rifle, or donning a gas mask.
I would say the main reason is that officers didn't sleep in the same quarters as the rank and file soldiers where it was more likely for ticks and fleas to spread because of such cramped living conditions. It would also be a good way for people to know who the officer is in times when no one is wearing their armour.

I love Eno's reaction, the way his fur is standing on end, his wide eyed expression, his knee jerk reaction and how's he's about to spill his drink. I do wonder what anthro's think of us humans.
