My eyes blink open slowly, seeing nothing but inky blackness. It’s cloying and oppressive, suffocating whatever light could have remained. I try moving my arms, my legs. Nothing budged. There’s a cold weight around my wrists and ankles. Dragging them downwards, pinned to the floor below. My fingers scuff and scratch against the floor in front of me, desperate for any purchase on the smooth metal floor. It simply squeaks and squeals, freshly polished this morning.
My breath hitches as a clunk sounds out in front of me. It sounded a mile away, reverberating in the empty, dark space. Yet, I knew exactly what that sound was. It’s a door, the hiss of air as it slowly closes, pressing back into the frame with a similar clunk. My head pulls upwards, unrestrained and free to move however I see fit. Nothing. The sound is gone, the draft of air finally passes over me. It had come and gone before I had even been able to see a glimpse of where the portal from this dark abyss had been.
Tap, tap, tap. What’s that? A gentle yellow glow could be seen at the edge of the room, slowly moving towards me. I squint my eyes, desperate for a clear look. It looks like I wouldn’t have to strain and squeeze my eyes. It’s moving closer. Obscured by the darkness, my mind is left to wander as the low, heavy tapping gets near. It sounds as if someone was slapping the metal floor below, like a pair of seal fins against a wet rock. Heavy, clumsy, constant. The light becomes clearer, more defined as the distance closes. It’s a spiral pattern, fanning outwards, alternating between black and gold. It folds over itself, never slowing down or speeding up. A constant, pulsing spiral for whatever lay behind the light. Despite the glow of the light just feet away, the dark folds over itself. It suppresses and diminishes the light just feet ahead of me. Forming wispy, black trails around the shape as it finally steps in front of me.
The light is blinding and oppressive when so close. I can just barely see the frames of what looks like a visor, clinging to the vague shape of a head. Large, tufted ears stand upwards from the dark, silent shape standing quietly in front of me.
“H-hello? C-can you help me?” Silence. My words bounce around the room, filling the corners with the sound of my confused, shaky voice. The shape doesn’t respond. It’s light slowly falls downwards, illuminating my bound, shackled paws. I squint my eyes, trying to shut out the now glaring light directly in my eyes.
Click.
A second light flares to life. I catch a single glimpse of that same, luminous visor before something is forced around my head. I screech and try to stand, only succeeding in being tugged back down to the floor below as my restraints stay taut. My body crashes against the floor, echoing with the limp thud of my chest. My eyes are screwed tight as the shape’s paws grasp my shoulders, pulling me back into the position I found myself in just moments before. I take shaky, shuddering breaths. There was nowhere to go. Nothing to do.
My eyes open, instantly filled by that same undulating spiral. A screen just an inch in front of my face, permeating the view in front of me with that bright, black and gold light. It completely consumed my vision. Where as before, the inky black weight of the dark blinded me, an alluring, twisting spiral overwhelmed my sight. The quiet plastic slapping fades away, the shape’s job complete. My eyes are drawn inwards, to the center of the spiral. There was nowhere else to look. Nowhere else I wanted to look. It pulled me deeper, deeper into its depths. It had seemed so shallow and two dimensional moments before. Now it seemed as if it had expanded and encircled me, subsuming the frames around the visor. Alluring, hypnotic, attractive. Words so low and unbefitting of the deep, twirling black and gold tunnel funneling me deeper.
My eyes spin and fall into the pinprick of the spiral, the vanishing point. I had to see the end of it, of all of it. Just a few more rotations, another slap against the metal floor. The low, heavy slap against the metal floor ahead falls away from my awareness, crowded out of my senses. Smell, sounds, touch drift away, replaced by the distracting, hypnotic draw of the spiral. My head goes slack, resting against my chest. The spiral doesn’t move. It remains comfortably in my view, keeping me in its grasp. It’s tight grasp. My eyes are spinning, the spiral is burrowing deep into my mind. All that matters or will matter is the spiral. The spiral. The seemingly endless spiral that I couldn’t ever imagine taking my eyes away from. How could I? It calls and beckons to me. Deeper. Deeper. Deeper. Sink into its depths and let myself be consumed by the emptying sensation, draining every thought and machination of my mind. My mind sinking, beckoned into the cylindrical tunnel in front of me.
My jaw goes slack, tongue hanging limply from my lips. I don’t notice the slow line of drool seeping from my maw. All I see is the spiral. All I know is the black and gold world around me, removing the need for worry or anxiety. All that matters is the twisting, turning seduction of mindless viewing. Watch and wait. Follow it deeper. Find the end. I was so close, I felt as if I could reach my paw out and grasp the center of the spiral. So close, yet so far from my goal. I’m empty now, reaching for what lay ahead, grasping at an illusion. I’ll never know what’s at the end, and I don’t seem to want to. The enticement of the spiral keeps me under, the simple act of letting myself relax and watch. Completely empty. Open for whatever is funnelled into my mind. My drool drips onto the floor below, the strand breaking off from my lips. A final drop for my empty mind. The floor beneath me whirs to life and whisks me out of the room on a hidden conveyor belt. I don’t notice, I don’t want to. All that matters is the spiral.
