Got a lot of texturing work done on this last night, still have a long ways to go though.  These renders are just showing the cabin of the environment.  The huge, gnarly tree and the rest of the man made environment are hidden.  This is just one of the handful of environment / props Im working on right now for my graduating portfolio.

                    I've found your question to be amongst the most common when regarding 3d art.  For the most part it really doesn't matter what software was used at all.  Most of the 3d animation software out there is more than capable of doing stuff just like this.  Whether it be lightwave, maya, 3d Max, Soft Image, Animation Master, Cinema 4d, etc etc.  It really isn't relevant what software was used, the techniques implemented should be the concern.
