a compelling story often has no clear cut victim, or culprit, so much as... a set of hard choices, and the consequences of them.
i wonder what solutions can be found for the excess daughters of impoverished farmers, granted...I've seen some STRONG ladies, sooo...there's that? otherwise, maybe the mayor should do what he can to enrich the livelihood of the farmers so they CAN care for all of their offspring! we will see where the story goes, though, won't we?

well the thing is, is aiding with financial reform really the thing to do now? I mean, he just confessed to willing child murder, AND that it's a fairly common practice in the region, plus it appears there WAS another option, I don't know how accurate that "indentured whore" description was but it would be have to be pretty extreme if killing the child would seem like a preferable option. I'd actually like to see one of the girls who grew up under the mayor's system and see how she feels about this.
well, exploring that thought pattern, in this agrarian society...do you imprison the lot for murder, or install a new system, dealing with the underlying issue. I dunno wreally waht makes the most sense. punish past crimes, or declare future examples punishable. cause...if all your farmers are imprisoned...well the mayor probably doesn't have enough space, and it would likely strongly impact the rest of the family if the husband and father is prevented from working.
i vote for magical contraceptives. but it does kinda revert to that ancient thing of..sons more valuable than daughters, things like carrying lineage...or just being stronger farmers.

I'd hate to play the feminist card but...maybe some education on how woman aren't actually worthless or burdens to be married off? Maybe if they had an inkling that a daughter could actually be an earner or help out if only given the opportunity then they wouldn't go killing them off? Last I checked girls can be pretty good farmers too.
The weird twist on this for me is farmers just assuming girls are useless to the point of being better off dead than kept alive and working. The way I was raised, I was cleaning house, washing clothes and doing yardwork at 7, right along with my sisters. My mother grew up on a farm, and she was hardcore on us all knowing how to do these things.
It also makes you wonder what adult females are treated like and thought of as well... if they were worthless until they were married off, what worth did they gain after that point? Housemaids and baby makers? And if that's all they're good for in a farmer's family, why would it bother said farmers if they were to get sent off someplace where they literally just did the same thing?
It just seems a bit out of left field for me.

Somehow...this is both shocking to me and yet, not surprising, given the era of the time that this setting is appeared in. Though the look of despair on his face is absolutely relatable. Been there at times myself.
Reminds me when I get financially stable again, I've a new comic series to try and start adding to my repitoire.

So... has it been practice in the past that low class females turn into 'indentured whores'? I know that's one of many bad paths humans use on each other, but he seemed very willing to do good by the poor people's children... what would convince the farmers so completely that if they turned to a helpful lord for help, their children would only become slaves and sex toys?
I mean this is their children. You'd think from reading this that the lord wouldn't have even called in a monster hunter, much less given a damn about the disappearances in this case, and once he learned of the truth, would have been more angry at his time being wasted than concerned about the barbarity of the act if he was such a bad lord that this is how his subjects think of him.
