Ambitious (by Enigmaarts)
YCH from the talented

Quilldragon as practice.
Arix grinned at the tenebrous canopy ahead of him. A peer recommended he take on the frontier if he found urban mercenary work wanting and dreary. The thought of fresh challenges and vistas spurred him to seek the employ of a human realm expanding their borders southward. The rugged innocence of the wild had thrilled him at the first as it had his fellow guardsman, but soon enough, the adversity waned. Exploring and novel scouting assignments gave way to routine patrols between the new settlements.
Thus, he found himself entering the demense of Ill-fang, stalker of the night. With every crunch of foliage beneath his clawed pads, a welcome warmth began to radiate through from his core as he felt his inner flame grow. His stride lengthened and he tasted the air for the scent of his quarry. To a diminished extent, the scent permeated the whole region, demarcating the feral's demense.
This boundary the humans transgressed in their ignorance. Therefore, Ill-fang responded as feral dragons did when threatened---expel the invaders. A savage massacre followed. Only one half-preserved dock permitted some level of harbor for the vessels ferrying provisions for the fledgeling port. Their whole militia had lasted all of ten minutes against a feral dragon. At twilight, a ship elected to brave the waters which the glowing serpent patrolled. Just when they had weighed anchor, the eerie glow of their foe silhouetted his dark form beneath the shadowed waters. Corpses and chaos remained when the beast departed.
Now, Arix found himself deep within the feral's domain. He'd drawn his sword sometime ago as the scent strengthened. With such a pungent odour, he knew the beast lingered near, yet Arix's senses failed to divine a specific direction. Then, he paused. Silence fell a short distance back and the growing realization spurred Arix to seek shelter. Fear or anticipation, no distinction remained between the two, but Arix utilized the greater awareness and energy. He slowed his breathing and listened. The faint sound of padding drew near, but of greater importance, a haunting green luminescense waxed ever stronger.
Arix smiled a broad, savage leer to himself. He adjusted his grip on his blade, trustworthy and familiar. Fear, excitement, zeal, and anger, he fed all his emotions to the inner flame. For the first time in weeks, a worthy opponent stood just overhead. Though he faced a feral, he too was a dragon. The light grew to its brightest, and Arix's grin broadened a slight more.
