I hear ya. I'm not killing out myself at the job any longer myself.

Six day weeks, eight hour shifts, sounds no different than modern law enforcement.

I was told that the police in my country work twelve hour shifts (I dunno if that's really true because it sounds off...).

No not off. Hard to comprehend, but not off.
One of our neighbors for a short time, before they moved on, was an officer and from what I understood was that our state had tried an experimental change of duty shifts from the usual 8 to that absurd 12 hour regime, under the assumption that with two daily shifts down from three, would save the department and the State tax payer dollars. All that ended up doing was wearing out the officers on and off duty sooner, and made the rest of the supporting staff equally unhinged and exhausted.

Needless to say it was a grand failure and the 8 hour shifts were reinstated a half year later from the beginning of that awful experiment; much to the relief of all, the citizens included!

She don't like them. Very convenient.
