OOh, Shiny (2)
Practice pic for coloring patent-leather. I drew this second one after becoming convinced that I had lost the original artwork for the first version before scanning it, only to find it literally minutes after inking this one. I completed both pics for posting and invite the viewership to see how many differences they can spot between the two.
No background for these two, as the focus was learning to draw patent leather (in this case, the boat shoes) convincingly, although since I have the full-size 300dpi artwork I could build a backdrop later and superimpose both pics atop it. Assuming I'm motivated to, which I'm not :)
Both pics were inked with Speedball India ink and a Windsor & Newton #2 round/pointed bristle brush, all the way down to the laces and eyelets on Todd's shoes. While I was at it, I also tried to duplicate the asymmetric appearance of a boat shoe when viewed head on, as well as the unruly-looking appearance of new rawhide laces, as any of you who've had this type of shoe would know.
As for Tina, I tried re-drawing Tina's Vans with a more accurate fine checkerboard pattern without outlines, based on photo reference, but decided to change it back to the coarse pattern used on the first pic after viewing both in their resized version (I do all my pics as 2500x3300 then shrink them to about 750x1000 or so (for VCL guidelines) before compressing for Web display).
Again, did I pull off the shiny? (cause, that's the real reason for drawing this (and then drawing it again :) )
