Thank you! It is his skin. He is an engineered being; his skin is designed to function as insulation as well as armor so he can explore alien worlds unhindered by a bulky space suit. It has a thick, rubbery sort of texture, that being the reason for the folds and seams in his skin....to allow for better flexibility.
